Movies you meant to see but never did

There’s a lot of films that I never quite got around to seeing, whether or not they were good. Any of the John Wayne westerns. Cool Hand Luke. Any of the Pink Panther movies after the first.

Any that you just never saw and would love to now?

I’ve always wanted to see more Hitchcock movies but never made it past the handful of his most popular; Vertigo, North by Northwest, The Rear Window, The Birds, Psycho

I’ve never seen Last Tango in Paris, most likley becasue it was rated X in the 70’s and by the time they released the R-rated version it was just another old movie. I’m guessing the rated X version is fairly tame by todays standards, I’d like to see that one.

I’ve never gotten around to seeing Schindler’s List. My parents probably thought my sister and I were too young to see it when it first came out. And as an adult whenever I have a movie night at home I’m never in the mood to watch such a heavy, serious film.

Wow, such a final-sounding title to this thread! You’re still alive! Watch 'em now!

Dirty Dancing is my answer.

Yeah, I probably should have made it sound less gloomy.

…haven’t yet…

Shawshank Redemption
Raging Bull
Citizen Kane
Dr. Strangelove

Annie Hall

I don’t think there’s anything iconic that I mean to see but haven’t.

The few I still intend to see are just low-enough profile that I haven’t had the opportunity. I’d be curious to see Real Life one of these days, and Housekeeping. I did finally see Life Is Sweet. There are a couple of terrible 90s Saturday Night Live movies that I have a trainwreck curiosity about, although I bet 5-10 minutes would clear that right up.

Definitely too late to see Song of the South. I had my hopes up 20 years ago when we were in Tokyo, where I searched in vain for a VHS copy after they were pulled from the US market. I’ve only seen snippets of the songs, and have heard that’s the best parts anyway.

I’ve never seen it either, though I was an adult when it was released. I tended to favor popcorn films back then.

I totally get it. It is not an easy movie to watch. But it is a powerful movie that is worth watching. Yeah, you will be sad at the end but the best movies are the ones that evoke emotion (I think). Up to you, of course, but I’d say it should be on the short list.

To the OP, for me:

  • Parasite
  • The Shape of Water
  • 1917
  • Hacksaw Ridge

I’ve never seen it and likely never will. I pretty much know the plot just from hearing about it, and the genre is not one I like.

Another vote for Schindlers List, but with petty personal reasons. I was planning to see it with my then girlfriend when it was released, but she dumped me the week before. The last thing I need is a reminder of sad personal times on top of a film about the holocaust. My tear ducts wouldn’t cope.

Add me to the Schindler’s list group.

Raging Bull
Taxi Driver

The Godfather

Being true to myself though, it’s a more of a case of being a movie “I should see” than of one I really want to. I’ve had so many people surprised/puzzled/dismayed that I’ve not yet seen it, and so it’s more a matter of checking a box for the cultural experience than anything else.
