Same here. For me, it’s up there with Primer for getting loads of mileage out of no budget.
I would also give a shout out to Time Trap, but while I enjoyed it, no one else seemed to and at $1 million is slightly out of the price range of what you’d call an Indy sleeper hit.
I tried. . .really tried. . .to watch a couple of older movies. The first was The Outlaw Josey Wales. What a stinker, right from the get-go. I only made it as far as them crossing the river and had to give it up. The second was The Long Riders, an oater about the James gang, starring three Carradines, two Keaches and both Quaid brothers as the gang members. While Rotten Tomatoes didn’t think either of them were bad (Josey Wales was in ranked in the 90s!), I found my attention wandering almost immediately and then hit the kill switch.
Cameron Crowe’s Untitled, aka the “bootleg” cut of Almost Famous. With 39 minutes of extra scenes the movie is even more of a joy to watch. The commentary track is pretty great too with Cameron’s mother on hand to add her perspective on the real-life adventures of her son as a budding rock journalist.
There’s a deleted scene from Almost Famous on YouTube in which William (the young journalist) plays Stairway to Heaven for his mother to convince her that rock music is of value.
Just watched Cosmos on amazon prime. It is a bit slow and the end gets a bit predictable, but it was fun and enjoyable. Apparently it was made on a very low budget, but looks really good considering and I couldn’t help think at parts they were just sort of going through the usual movie tropes sceens and shots and showing what they could do on a low budget, almost a showcase of their movie making skills, but that’s me just being cynical , worth watching .
I’m on a roll of Bad Movies. Watched Wrong Turn last night. This is like an Onion of Stupid. The outer layer is kinda thin, then you get passed it, and the layers get thicker and thicker. Started out as a ‘Deliverance’ type Hillbillies Attack Yuppies thing, then it takes just a… wrong turn. Unpeel the stupid, getting thicker every second. Goddamn Matthew Modine was in it. He must have run out of that sweet, sweet Memphis Belle and Full Metal Jacket money. All I can say is, Time dealt with him in a most unkind manner.
Watched Contact today. Boring, put me to sleep, woke up, it was still going on, getting stoopider as it went. I was REALLY disappointed to find out this was based on a Carl Sagan novel. I’m sure it was given the Hollywood Rim-Job and it’s nothing like he intended. Until I read the Wiki. He and Ann… oh, nevermind. What the fuck? I get what you were going for, but Jesus Christ, what a waste of time and film. Coulda done this little, whatever, in about 90 minutes.
Watching something worse right now. Review tomorrow, if I remember any of it.
That’s quite a review. Most people love Contact. I am not one of them, but not because it’s boring, but because it’s hard sci-fi that goes all mystical, which is a common trait that I really have no time for.
I thought the book was fine but not remarkable, and certainly not interesting enough to make me want to watch the film. I’m a big Sagan fan but fiction was not his strong point.
