Amazing movie. A must see. It’s going to take quite the movie for this not to be the best movie of 2022 and if it doesn’t get nominated for Best Picture next year at the Oscars, it’s a massive ripoff.
Really just an incredible movie and I think I might give it a 10/10 rating, something I don’t do very often at all. Just stellar and you are missing out if you don’t see it.
A24 were really slow off the mark here to promote and distribute EEAaO for some reason. It’s starting to pop up at more cinemas (usually for one showing at around 8:30pm) but the buzz is good. Still trying to find a showing I can get to.
A24 was clear upfront that this would be a platform release, starting in a handful of theaters and then expanding if word of mouth benefited the film. It’s gone from a film festival, to 10 theaters, to eventually more than 2,000 theaters… that’s about half the available theaters, so it should be seeable in most places.
That said, the numbers of showtimes near me are limited, but I think that’s because Doctor Strange is crowding out the theater.
If nothing else, the movie proves Chekov’s maxim that if a trophy shaped like a buttplug appears in Act One, then dimension-hopping pantsless martial artists will be trying to shove it up their ass to receive kung-fu superpowers in Act Three.
Having watched both (at the same theater), it really does go to show how effects do not a movie make. Although Everything Everywhere All At Once had the lower budget, how it handles multiple universes it is much more interesting (and funny) than the Marvel film. I don’t know that I would call it the best movie of 2022, but I definitely want to watch it again.
Re-watched The Wall (1982) for the first time in many years. The animation is a bit dated, but otherwise it was as good as I remembered. Apparently there was a lot of ego clashing and creative friction between director Alan Parker and Roger Waters (Parker later referred to the film as “the most expensive student film ever made”), but the end result was a unique, hard-hitting movie. The Wall album has always been a favorite of mine, so maybe I’m biased. Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) gave a surprisingly good performance as Pink, despite being a rock musician with no acting experience.
Maybe I’m getting too old to be enjoying Pink Floyd—so sue me.
Old - M Night Shyamalan performs a technically impressive feat of accelerating time for his characters while slowing interminably for his audience.
Wrath of Man - Guy Richie and Jason Statham reunite without their characteristic humor in this glum action film.
Senior Year - Nothing particularly ground-breaking in this “back to school” comedy starring a slimmed down Rebel Wilson. But it had some funny moments.
I dunno. When I play PF at home my youngest yells, “turn that down, pops!” Her boyfriend tolerates them—barely. They’re into some type of metal throat shredding music that annoys the heck out of me.
The 5th Element is coming back to theaters for a special showing. Always a favorite of mine.
“Courtesy of Fathom Events, The Fifth Element, starring Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, and a truly career-defining performance by Chris Tucker, will rocket back into theaters for special screenings on Sunday, June 26, and Wednesday, June 29.”
I love that movie. I remember watching it as a teenager, and the first time it was near incomprehensible. But I knew I wanted to watch it over and over and over and…
