Movies you've seen recently (Part 1)

Nope

I did not think this was a very good movie. I know Jordan Peele is getting a lot of praise and attention, but this movie was just adequate at best and kind of boring for a lot of its run time. Consider me hugely surprised. I didn’t even find the final 30 minutes, which were supposed to be very exciting, to be all that engaging.

Yeah, Nope was not great.

Is it too late to squeeze in one last comment about Turkish delight?

That should be a heading on a review.

Any clue on what the whole chimp segment had to do with the rest of it? My friend and I were conpletely clueless about that.

I just watched Bullit tonight. With the exception of the car chase, it really is an exceptionally boring movie. And, really, the car chase is really poorly edited. Dents come and go, the famous hubcaps… really could have been better.

Maybe take the answer to this to the Nope thread where spoilers are expected. Jordan Peele's NOPE (spoilers after OP)

Not really. This movie reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where they talk about Newman, Jerry’s difficult neighbor.

George: “I don’t know. Maybe with Newman…there’s more than meets the eye?”

Jerry: “Believe me. There’s less.”

Unless Nope is revealed to be some kind of masterpiece that has a bunch of hidden meanings…I believe it is just a very simple story that was not told well. The chimpanzee was an example of that.

Ah ok thanks!

I think we share the same opinion of the film. Shame because I though Get Out was terrific.

Thirteen Lives (Amazon Prime). Viggo Mortensen and Collin Farrell rescue the Thai kids trapped in a flooded cave. Directed by Ron Howard.

Gripping, engrossing, tense, fascinating. The word “hero” gets tossed about very freely these days, but this story is about something truly heroic.

It made me wonder, though: does this kind of thing happen frequently enough that “rescue cave diver” is a job description?

I gather that it’s not a job description; but rather a skill description. They are hobbyists whose skills are infrequently useful for such rescues.

It’s never too late for a good Billy Bob quote.

Shazam: I think I’m getting too old for these sorts of things.

Bullet Train (in theaters). It was an enjoyable film with quite a bit of absurdity thrown in. Some of it hit and some of it missed. On the whole enjoyable, but a bit disjointed. The performances by the cast was great with some unexpected, at least for me who had not seen who was in it, appearances at different points.

Ghostland*

Holy cow, this movie is not for everyone, but I found it absolutely thrilling. It is about an intense attack on a mother and her two teen daughters and the aftermath of that attack. I was completely gripped by this movie and I think that while it is definitely pushing the edge, it never went so far as to feel sadistic-to-watch, so to speak.

Other than the basic premise, this movie works best if you go in completely unspoiled. It streams on Netflix(USA) and was a thrill. I have a quibble with some of the late movie plot elements, as they felt like the movie just needed a bit of lengthening so they threw in a brief side-track. Otherwise, it was great.

This director directed the movie Martyrs, a French movie that is BRUTAL and honestly about 1000x close to being just plain cruel and sadistic. Ghostland was more enjoyable and thrilling by quite a bit.

*called Incident in A Ghostland in most regions, but shortened to Ghostland in the US for…no real reasons. It is 100% not a ghost story, so the title is useless.

Yeah, and Us still haunts me.

Urgh, even with this caveat I don’t think I could watch it…even though I’ve only heard Martyrs described. As with my other comment in this post, movies stay with me.

I’d recommend skipping Martyrs, for sure, then. I don’t even think as a film, it is good enough to warrant its intensity and violence. Ghostland, on the other hand, feels like a real movie that happens to be very intense. It is nowhere near as violent, either. Just intense assault and attempts to survive and escape.

I only thought “Us” was OK, but it was about ten times better than Nope, which I would categorize as a very bad script that was made by a very professional and skilled team. You still can’t save a bad script, though.

It was more Lupita Nyong’o’s performance.

I’ve never Fornicated anybody!
