Sit right back and you’ll hear a tale…
Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) - starring Vince Vaughn as Bradly (not Brad), a morally ambiguous hard workin’ regular guy who winds up running drugs for easy money, gets on the wrong side of the drug dealer, gets busted, gets sent to prison hell, gets his wife threatened in the most horrific of ways, gets revenge and gets dead … sorry, spoiler.
I was expecting an exploitative grindhouse type of affair - and there’s some of that - but it has long drawn out scenes in what is either an arthouse style, or the editor is all gooned up on Nyquil, as well as two or three subtexts, not the least of which is, 'Merca Fuck Yeah. It’s not a drama, it certainly isn’t an action film as the action is few and far between. Seriously, this movie could have lost about an hour and it would have told the same story. They just couldn’t really decide what they wanted this movie to be. The violence is over the top and sometimes hyper-realistic, and then they go with the grindhouse mannequin kills half the time as a style choice.
I’ll probably watch it again when I have three hours to kill - I dozed off a few times and I was having PlutoTV issues so I think I missed a scene or two.
Never mind.
Watched Knives Out Glass onion last night . Fun movie
Glass Onion - A Knives Out movie
MUCH better than the first one. I liked this movie a ton. Very fun mystery setup and I enjoyed just about the entire cast and all the twists were very fun.
I am looking forward to the third one. Next year at Christmas, I hope?
A few years ago after I saw a lot of people talking about it, I decided to watch the romantic comedy The Holiday, but I gave up on it about a half hour in, it just was not working for me. Tonight I thought, after again seeing so many people listing it as one of their favourite Christmas movies, I may have misjudged it and should give it another try.
Nope. I turned it off at the same place. I hate it. Ugh!
We watched it last night.
Very enjoyable.
The Devil Wears Prada. Super lame, just a vehicle to worship the physical beauty of Anne Hathaway. It succeeds very well on that point, but as a person who rarely watches movies, I had to look her name up twice while writing this review and will no doubt forget it again ten minutes hence. Did I say she was pretty? Yes. Oh, and her boss was a bitch or something.
Interesting article. Thank you.
I bought abd watched several classic Christmas novies on prime.
The cost of renting 3 times is more than buying. I’ll probably watch every Christmas. Makez sebse to buy.
Watched The Polar Express tonight. Fun adventure watching a kid recapture his belief in the spirit of Christmas and Santa…
Highly recommend for kids and their parents.
Matilda The Musical was released on Netflix here this week, and I just watched it. I am already a great fan of the original film with Mara Wilson, but this is a whole new take, that touches on largely the same plot points, with more intensity mixed in. It still takes flights of fancy, and isn’t brutal, though much darkness is implied.
This one is based on the successful stage musical, with songs written by Tim Minchin, which have his distinctive lyrical fingerprints all over them. Alisha Weir plays Matilda, Lashana Lynch is Miss Honey, and Emma Thompson is Trunchbull. It’s wonderful. I was completely captivated, transported, and emotionally affected by every moment.
I could not recommend it more.
Awesome, it’s now on my list.
I just saw Interstellar (Nolan). Pretty entertaining film and will have you thinking. Like any Nolan film bring a pencil and paper, because shit ain’t simple and you’re gonna want to take notes.
The best thing about the movie though is the robots TARS and CASE (STAR and ACES?). It’s like we’ve been doing robots all wrong until now. I don’t know how good they would be for your living room floor, but hey, no one’s perfect.
The neighbor in the “major award” scene (actually, the film’s director) is wearing a Miami Dolphins ski hat; the Dolphins weren’t established until 1965. The Christmas Story house and museum, in Cleveland, has a list of anachronisms in the movie; Melinda Dillon’s hairstyle is another.
We just saw the new Avatar, and it is fantastic. A great movie in every way.
Tried to watch Glass Onion, the new Knives Out flick. Couldn’t make it past the first 20 minutes.
IMHO, it gets better…
Good film, and the acting was superb. The story is about Paul Rusesabagina and his wife Tatiana, and it sorta glosses over the horrors of the genocide. I would like to see a film on the genocide itself, in the same vein as The Killing Fields.
You may be right. I couldn’t wade through all the emoting going on. “Look at us, we’re being tongue-in-cheek!”
You really have not seen that film at all if you only saw the first 20 minutes…
It’s cool if you couldn’t, but I’m curious what made you turn it off so quickly. Good or bad, that movie needs a little longer to make a decision. I’d wait until they meet Ed Norton’s character and he has spoken to Daniel Craig’s character one-on-one. Pretty early, but far enough to set up the situation.
