Movies you've seen recently (Part 1)

Hard to say. He also just had a drama (Magazine Dreams) premiere at Cannes, it’ll probably be distributed later this year.

Banshees of Inisherin. It’s either the funniest tragedy or the saddest comedy ever; and I’m not sure the tonal shift in the middle completely works. But I’d give it a qualified thumbs up.

With regards to the Oscar nominees – we’ll watch Women Talking when it’s available to rent on demand, and possibly Tar. We’ll pass on All Quiet…not sure I want to watch a “harrowing” war movie. No desire to see Avatar. Seen all the rest; favorite so far is The Fabelmans.

Something I learned from Banshees…the pronunciation of the name “Padraic”: it’s POR-rick.

Colin Farrell’s character is named Pádraic Súilleabhán; I imagine if he’d come to America he’d go by Patrick Sullivan.

I learned that on the Moon Child TV show. Very good show.

Just watched Spiderman : Into the Spider Verse and really enjoyed it. Just found out they’re making a sequel and am excited to see it.

Two sequels, actually. I enjoyed some aspects of it, but I’ve seen it twice and I’m not a huge fan.

Great movie, I’ve watched it a couple of times and really liked it. I’ll see the new one in the theater just for the visuals.

I second this emotion. I saw it in the theaters having only seen the poster when we were at the theater for something else, and was blown away by the style, the story and the music. I am looking forward to the next one, though with some trepidation since I liked the first one so much.

This past Saturday I watched, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, and I have to say I totally loved the movie! I have to say the “mania” part of the title is well deserved, but the effects are nothing less than fabulous. Michael Douglas and Bill Murray are still great actors in their senior years, and Kathryn Newton as the granddaughter is a refreshing and energetic addition to the group.

Just to be nitpicky (this is the Straight Dope Message Board after all), she is a granddaughter, but her grandparents are not featured in the movie, since she is Scott’s daughter from his first marriage. Hank and Janet may act as her surrogate grandparents in a way, but they are not her real grandparents. The family dynamic presented in the movie is good though and she was a nice addition.

Come on, you’re just showing off. LOL

I believe she does call Hank “Grandpa” in the movie, though you’re right of course that they aren’t biologically related.

The original Beverly Hills Cop. It really holds up well, both plot-wise and comedy-wise. Murphy was at the top of his game then.

Even the gun play? The laughter in the theater while bullets were flying made me uncomfortable back when I saw it (for the first and only time) during its original run. I’d have thought that would have aged badly for a comedy.

Yeah, it was pretty badly done, but overall the movie worked.

This is funny. We get Paramount Plus with our Walmart+ subscription and we watched this. Yeah, the final 30 minutes are OK, but the majority of the movie fell flat for us. I’d seen it on TV, with the TV edit, growing up, but I’d never seen the actual proper movie.

It was OK. Cute, I guess. Nothing too amazing. I think I’ve seen Eddie be funnier elsewhere, especially in his two comedy specials. I even prefer him as the donkey in Shrek.

I watched All Quiet a month ago, and don’t think you’re missing much. It struck me as ‘by the numbers’ rather than character-driven or profound.

I didn’t care about the characters, beyond some distaste for the generals casually throwing away the lives of their troops. The fact that the soldiers were German made it easier to not care about their fate (within the context of WWI) — altho there have been World War movies, e.g. Das Boot, where I had no problem supporting the (anti-Nazi) Germans.

Agreed. Harbour elevates this from “After-school special” to something genuinely fun and heartwarming to watch despite not really having any lines. The young people were all excellent too; in fact, Anthony Mackie was probably the weakest performance in this of the main characters, which says something.

Also, a fun turn by Jennifer Coolidge being her usual self.

My nits are being picked! Technically she is the third generation to use ant-man technology, so in a sense, she is his granddaughter…

But back to the the original purpose of this thread. I saw Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which managed to be a little darker, while keeping it’s humor and telling a good story with a good message. The animation style is a bit different from the other films in the Shrek Universe (the Shrekiverse?), but not overly so. Overall an enjoyable movie with Banderas and Hayek reprising their roles. That they were willing to after 10 years is great even though of course being animated they did not have to worry about not being able to physically do everything.

I just watched this too. I really enjoyed it and like you, I thought parts of it had an “after school special” vibe. I also thought a 60s era movie. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken came to mind or similar to the Disney movies of that time.
