Movies you've seen recently (Part 1)

That’s the issue with streaming anything in our market place. A 2005 movie would be shuttled off to the $5 Walmart discount bin if it was a DVD, but no streaming service will pay monthly dues to hold on to a film few want to see.

So there is me, who wants to watch 20 year old films he’s already seen just to have on as background from one of his three streaming services and I am told to go pound sand.

More or less.

It’s on YouTube! (Probably with commercials)

Kamikaze Girls (2004) - YouTube

My fourth subscription to the rescue! Thank you, sir.

I am off to watch this instead of doing my work.

Partway through The Little Things (2021 - Hulu), starring Denzel, Rami Malek and Jared Leto. Cops and serial killer, but not bad if you’re bored.

Never forget that many states have extensive library networks between their libraries. I can get a lot of movies you wouldn’t expect to be available if I"m willing to wait for it to come from Northern Michigan or something.

I got As The Gods will on Blu-ray and I’ve hardly met anyone who has heard of it. One library in Michigan had a copy and they sent it over free of charge(to me…my library might pay for these).

Vampire Girl was a DVD and some librarian out there ordered it back in 2012 or so(I think?) and a copy was sent over free of charge.

The library system in Michigan is amazing.

I take it back. Stay bored.

You’ll wanna see this, then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzRzojHC3iE

I envy you. Libraries are not a priority at my local level, it seems.

Fun little movie using, but honestly kind of barely using, the Groundhog Day “repeating day” gimmick.

Fun movie and it streams right there on Netflix, so I consider it a nice little filler movie on the service.

Hostiles, an oater with Christian Bale, Wes Studi, Rosamund Pike. In 1882, an army captain and his detail are told to escort an Indian family back to their homeland so the patriarch can die in peace. Trouble dogs them. It’s not bad, but rather slow at times.

Watched Bullet Train the other night.
I enjoyed while I was watching. Then when it was over, it was over. Not much about it stuck with me for very long.
Stylish, some neat action, and about 25% less clever than it tries to be.

I liked it too, but I never really think about it.

Renfield

Very highly recommended.

Consider me very pleasantly surprised. I saw this movie had mixed reviews, but I found it to be a very funny and satisfying comedy. Nic Cage is Dracula and he’s terrific, but Nicholas Hoult and Awkwafina are also really fun in it.

I enjoyed it all the way through and near the end, it has an incredible action sequence that manages to be engaging and hilarious.

I really recommend this one to everyone. Much fun and laughing.

I know many movies are forthcoming and I have to see many, but this is the best 2023 release I’ve had a chance to see so far.

I’ve been slowly but steadily turning into a low-key Nicholas Hoult fan. Most recently on The Great and The Menu. But looking him up recently I was surprised to realize that he was also a successful child actor, the title character in About a Boy playing against Hugh Grant.

Thanks, I only saw About a Boy once when it was new and didn’t realize it was him.

I am aware he is Beast in the new X-men movies.

This is where I first became aware of him. I keep seeing that little boy in all his adult roles. About a Boy is a great movie, btw. Great cast with Rachel Weisz, Hugh Grant, and Toni Collette (who’s terrific as Hoult’s clueless mom).

yesterday I got to see the documentary Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire on a big screen and I highly recommend it to anyone who is at risk of wildfire or even just cares about the climate. stunning, powerful, and informative.

From the description on the website, this sounds like a remake of Bring Your Own Brigade (2021).

I haven’t seen that one so I watched the trailer. It is certainly on the same subject; likely both are worth watching. I want to know as much as I can on the subject, that’s for sure.

Fifty Shades of Grey, my God what a bore. Should be called Fifty Shades of Contract Negotiations. Didn’t finish it, the only entertaining thing about this movie was Inna’s and mine discussion about whether pretty guys can be good lovers, now that was funny. I think we concluded “no” because getting laid is too easy for them.

(Don’t ask me to debate this here, lol.)
