Movies you've seen recently (Part 1)

I guess this is a good thing, but I thought the third one was kind of the end of the current series, a closure to the trilogy. Perhaps I’m just not remembering it right.

Yeah, but you’d think that the apes speaking English would be an even bigger clue.

No film studio wants to end a franchise, at least not while it’s still making money.

The moon was blown out of orbit in 1999.

Ooh, strong disagree on this one. I adore the music and have the soundtrack on rotation throughout the year. The music (aside from the amazing animation, obviously) is what sets the movie apart, really.

With the exception of Kidnap the Sandy Claws, which I find grating, it’s a series of absolute gems.

A Haunting in Venice

Not recommended.

I think it is time to declare Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot adaptations as dead. There is some production skill in these movies, but they are quite frequently boring. This one pulled me in to start and was then rather dull. I did not like his Murder on the Orient Express and I don’t remember Death on the Nile and it hasn’t bee that long. This was another 100 minute movie that left no impression or impact once it was over.

Mainly a huge shrug…for the third time.

We watched Beetlejuice on the weekend. The story holds up well enough for a Halloween-themed movie; it’s not like it’s a complicated plot. The animations and special effects are kind of funny to see now. It’s Tim Burton and it shows.

Apparently there’s a sequel going to be released next year with most of the original cast returning.

And Tim Burton directing. He has fallen so far in terms of quality movies, I’m hoping he can pull off the same magic he showed us in the late 80s and early 90’s.

Well, he didn’t direct the first one, so it shows how far he has fallen to do this. Looking now, the last of his I actually enjoyed was Big Fish in 2003, and he was doing misfires even then with Planet of the Apes before that.

I must be misunderstanding you; Tim Burton directed Beetlejuice.

Fair points, of course.

What struck me, though, was Heston’s character repeatedly picking on one of his fellow astronauts once they’d crash-landed, acidly reminding him of how everyone they knew and loved on Earth was now dust, how no one was going to come rescue them, etc. It struck me as odd that the mission commander would be such a jerk to one of his two comrades. Not exactly great for morale, or his command authority.

I have never understood that either. Straight away you end up disliking Taylor.

He did direct Beeteljuice.

Ah sorry, I thought Nightmare before christmas, which was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Me, after the final scene in No One Will Save You:

“What the hell?”

I mean, thoroughly, completely, what the hell.

I liked it though. The alien designs were pretty cool. Those creepy knuckle-feet feet are the stuff of my nightmares. The house says I’m crazy, but did anyone else notice the protagonist’s proportions growing vaguely alien-shaped throughout the film? It wouldn’t make any more sense if they did, but I swear her hands and feet seemed unnaturally long at times.

This movie just went hard at being weird and inexplicable and didn’t resolve much. What was up with the monkey and praying mantis aliens? What was up with the doppleganger? I don’t mind ambiguity but I do like the sense that there’s a coherent theme. My husband thought it was incoherent. I wouldn’t go that far, but it did leave many, many questions at the end.

When Evil Lurks

Highly, highly, recommended.

The best 2023 movie I have seen up to this point and I have seen 59 2023 releases this year. An absolute requirement if you like movies. It is a horror movie, but I was gripped to the screen the entire time in a way that is very special.

Just an excellent, scary, enthralling movie from beginning to end. I mean, wow. I was blown away and this soared to the top of my “best movies of 2023” immediately.

Essential.

It seemed pretty clear to me. (spoilers follow for the film No One will save you)

The aliens were small creatures, who dropped into larger bodies, so the ones she killed may not be dead (it may have been the same alien coming back in different bodies), and in the end, given the fight she put up, they in effect gave her control of her own fiefdom inside the invaded planet. She had control over the local town who had been body snatched out of respect for her fight.

But in effect, she was a psychopath, killed her best friend, and felt guilty after that. The invasion though, unleashed her killer instinct and allowed her to go full killer, and perhaps that was what they were looking for in their invaded overlords

It’s what I got from it.

Wow, I got basically the opposite. The aliens looked into her mind, saw her genuine remorse and determined she was fit to control her community. I’m not sure whether the subjects were truly happy or not, but the aliens seemed concerned with her healing and happiness.

The Wrath of Becky (2023). I never saw the original so didn’t really know what to expect – I was thinking maybe something like Pearl. The first 10 minutes had me going “WTF?” but it turns out that this is a movie with a sense of humour, though it does know how to be serious once it gets going. I thought it was smart and expertly executed, though all the blood and gore may not be to everyone’s taste.

Basically a revenge movie where a precocious 16-year-old girl takes on a terrorist cell. The organization is called “the Noble Men” which seems a thinly veiled stand-in for the Proud Boys, but the movie isn’t political. I’d give it a “highly recommended” rating, and I note that RT gives it a much higher rating than IMDb, and the critics’ consensus over there is 86% which I think is well deserved. This in fact is one sequel that’s generally regarded as much superior to the original. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I guess there’s craft in endings people can take in multiple ways. This article backs my idea, but another ones I’ve read head out with “it’s all a dream”. This one goes with your interpretation.

Personally, I never went with the aliens being kind or forgiving. I saw them as absolute predators interested in taking the world. She serves them. I suppose that’s the crux of those two opinions
