Movies you've seen recently (Part 1)

Not just the best of the Python movies, but it’s on my list of the top ten movies of all time!

It’s been almost 50 years, and I still will never forget our perplexity and eventual delight at the end of that movie. I mean, not just our perplexity, but that of the whole audience.

Yeah, I remember when I first watched the ending and how they set it up earlier in the film so you weren’t sure if the movie had ended or not. That was brilliant bit of editing.

Eh, I’d put Life of Brian ahead of it but it’s still a spectacular film.

Yeah, I’d probably rank their big movies as:

  1. Life of Brian
  2. Holy Grail
  3. Meaning of Life

But all very funny.

Along Came a Spider 2001 Morgan Freeman, Monica Potter

Based on the Alex Cross book series. I enjoyed the thriller. Alex has to find and recover a Senator’s daughter. There’s several unexpected twists and turns. Michael Wincott plays a convincing psycho villain.

I’ve seen criticism that the movie didn’t follow the book. The wiki movie article lists the differences. The book was very convoluted. I’m not sure a 3 hour movie could cover everything and make sense.

I think the movie does a nice job covering what’s important and still keeps the suspense. I was surprised at the ending.

I wish they would have made more Alex Cross films with Morgan Freeman.

Next up Kiss the Girls. It’s the first Alex Cross movie. I’ve heard it’s psycho character is even weirder.

For me as a kid, Python served as proof that intelligent and hilarious people have always existed. Most of their best stuff(show, stage show, first two movies) were out before I was born and are unbelievable. It’s true the show is hit and miss, but the guy were so zany and creative, they tried every single thing they could do and only less than half is actually hilarious.

The movies are much more focused and even Meaning of Life, a sketch show basically, is almost all hits.

Kids in the Hall? Good, but we have never really had a sketch group as funny as Monty Python.

Pet Semetary - (2019)

Recommended.

Note: I’ve never read the book or even seen the 1989 movie. This was my first experience with this story.

I liked it quite a bit. I’m quite slow in the sense I really thought this was about “resurrected animals that go bad” and when I realized there is more than just that plot point, it actually caught me off guard. The movie is signalling big-time to the viewer about what is going to happen with the daughter, wife, and the family in general. I missed all the signals, so it served as a surprise.

Yeah, not a bad movie at all. Check it out. Streams on Paramount +.

Just finished The First Omen, a 2024 prequel to the 1976 movie. Suitably creepy god-and-devil flick, with some good actors. On Hulu.

You might want to give the original movie a look. It’s quite flawed but follows the book more closely. Movies aside, I’d rate Pet Sematary as one of Stephen King’s best books, along with The Shining and a few others.

1,000 x this. I thought the remake was pretty good but it’s missing Fred Gwynne’s fine portrayal of Judd.

I’ve always thought that the Pythons were writers who had to perform their own material, while the Kids tended to be performers who had to write to their own strengths. When the Pythons dressed in drag it was funny because they were so bad at it. When the Kids in the Hall dressed as women it was funny (usually) because they were so good at it.

I’m dying to see this ever since I saw the trailer, which I should note had more dialog than the entire Fury Road movie.

We’re planning on our anniversary June 11th.

100% agree. Also, among the Kids, I thought Scott Thompson was actually the weakest at drag.

I saw The Fall Guy yesterday. In-jokes were fun, the plot was tortured, and the stunts were exciting.

I’ve seen the trailer for the new Joker movie twice now. If the movie is half as good as the trailer, it’ll be an excellent movie. Just wow!

Is there any connection to the Fall Guy tv series?

They recently began advertising a directors cut. That didn’t sound promising that they are already changing it.

I want to see it. Maybe in the next couple weeks.

Not much, though

Lee Majors and Heather Thomas show up at the very end. Cute cameo.

Don’t read the spoiler from the above post. Not sure why it was even included.

The end credits (of the movie The Fall Guy) are worth sitting through.

That’s barely even a spoiler, it has nothing to do with the plot. I didn’t even get what the reference there was until I read about it afterwards.
