I thought it was very entertaining, and I’m glad I watched it.
It’s classified as a horror movie. But if you’re a fan of “serious” horror films, you’re probably not going to like it, since much of the story is ridiculous. I am wondering if it’s actually a thinly-disguised parody of horror films. At any rate, it was a fun watch, with lots of twists & turns, and a bit of humor.
I think the writer of the screenplay wrote “Barbarian” at the top of his script and it made it all the way to being the title even though it has zero to do with the movie. I think that’s actually kind of perfect since the movie is really better seen knowing nothing, not even a descriptive title.
Society is another great “go in blind” movie(one of the best, actually), but at least the title a little bit describes the movie’s premise or possibly theme.
His Girl Friday recommended
Classic screwball comedy from Howard Hawks. Cary Grant is a newspaper editor; Rosalind Russell is his ex-wife and star reporter. She decides she wants to give up journalism, marry an insurance salesman, and live happily ever after. Grant is determined to persuade her to come back to both him and the newspaper (else we wouldn’t have a movie), and he’ll use any means necessary to get his way. All this against the backdrop of a sensational news story about a convicted murderer who’s scheduled to be executed in the morning.
We recently finished Moonlighting, and during a scene early in the movie where Grant and Russell are arguing, going at it tooth and nail, shouting over each other with witty comebacks, oldest daughter looks over at me, grinning wide. “Reminds me of David and Maddie,” she said. Bingo.
I saw its premier at Radio City in New York. When the jump scene happened, the entire theater went airborne and screamed.
I just finished Dune 2. Visually riveting, if a bit muddled story-wise (or perhaps I wasn’t paying close enough attention). By the ending, I’m assuming there’s going to be a third installment? I tried to read the book way back when I was into SF as a teen. I don’t think I finished it.
I found the story about McDonald’s interesting. Keaton is convincing at Ray Kroc. I didn’t realize he was such a ruthless hustler.
It’s interesting that from the beginning they had trouble with investors buying Franchises and then ignoring the business. As if the restaurant would magically make them money without any work. Consistency is crucial at McDonald’s. The food is pretty much the same at all their locations.
It’s a good film. They did a good job recreating the look and feel of fast food in the 1950’s. They recreated restaurant was convincing.
The subject isn’t the most exciting but it kept my interest.
The Catcher Was A Spy. Had a packed cast, including Paul Rudd, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Strong, and Jeff Daniels (Connie Nielsen only shows up for a few scenes, sadly. It was too dark lighting-wise in places and weird because Rudd’s usually so open and fun and Moe Berg was apparently very closed off and secretive. Decent and passed the time if you didn’t know the story.
Just watched The Fall Guy. It was a horrendous pile of utter nonsense. Completely unredeemingly awful claptrap. The plot made no sense, a RomCom with neither Rom nor Com, and the stunts just mindless choppy uninspired crap. I can’t believe anyone could possibly like such a maddening mess. Even the soundtrack sucked.
We watched Kinds of Kindness
Wow that movie has everything going on from home movies, avant garage cooking and Willem Dafoe in a pair of budgie smugglers.
It is also 2hr 45 mins long which is a lot of time for a lot of oddness. The sets , the camera work were all fantastic, the plots of the 3 acts , err not sure, first one I think I know what there were getting at, the remaining two, no clue.
That said quite an enjoyable 3 hrs although not for the squeamish .
A couple quick recommendations from me. Been watching movies, won’t mention the “don’t sees” this time.
The Blackcoat’s Daughter
Essential
I actually watched this 5 years ago, but am guilty of not having paid full attention to it. I re-watched it now and, wow, it’s incredible. I have to see Longlegs, but this is now my favorite Oz Perkins movie. If you haven’t seen it, go in blind and put stuff down and pay attention. It’s worth it and your focus pays off. Great movie.
Baskin
Recommended
Turkish horror movie. I give the director mad props on how far they went with this one and the plot and characters were great. I found myself very much entertained and intrigued. Again, I’d just go in blind. I’m not sure if “Baskin” means something in Turkish, but nothing in the story seems connected to that title.
