Movies you've seen recently (Part 1)

Helberg is also quite an accomplished pianist in his own right, and did all his own playing in the film.

And just for kicks and giggles, here’s the real McMoon and Jenkins:

Thanks for the great photo! I didn’t see any as good in my searches.

Living (Netflix) Remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru (1952), about a bureaucrat facing a terminal illness.

I see it’s been reviewed at least twice in this thread, but I’ll just throw in my 2 cents: I loved it. And Bill Nighy is a national treasure.

Twister–since it came out it’s been a traditional summer watch for me. Just a really fun popcorn movie with a great cast, pretty good FX (“we’ve got cows!!”), and terrific 5.1 surround sound.

“Actually, I think that’s the same one.”

Borderlands - I don’t know the source material, but this movie is pretty forgettable. Miscast Cate Blanchett, wonderful actor, not an action star. There was a fair amount of amusing material, particularly with Claptrap, voiced by Jack Black. In the middle of a big chaotic battle scene, my son leans over and says “they didn’t mix the song in loud enough”, which is just the sort of engagement you want from your audience during a big action scene. Not as terrible as I feared it would be.

Furiosa Fantastic action movie. Lots going on, really kept the story moving. I’m not sure I loved Chris Hemsworth as the big bad, but overall terrific. Only thing I wish is that I had watched Fury Road recently, to remember where that story started and left off.

I liked Chris Hemsworth and credit him for trusting the director. This is one of those performances that could be very bad if the wrong takes are used or if the director goes to far or even lets the actor go loose. It’s a controlled madness he shows and it works really well.

Furiosa is probably my #1 movie of the year at this point, though we do have 4 1/2 months to go.

Borderlands

Kind of recommended, surprisingly

  1. Wait, this is the movie people are hating on? It’s by no means horrible. Seriously.
  2. This movie was shot as an R-rated movie that was clearly 20-30 minutes longer than the cut you see here. Eli Roth was replaced by Tim Miller, who reshot the R-rated scenes to bring it down to PG-13. This is to the detriment of the movie. Roth deserves zero blame for some problems with the movie. Roth should NOT have agreed without final cut, which he obviously did not have.
  3. It’s very well cast. I liked everybody….except Keving Hart.
  4. Roth does deserve some negativity for his direction of Kevin Hart, who is stunningly boring in this movie. Anyone could have played that part and they gave him nothing to do.
  5. A harmless movie, just over 100 minutes or so.

A serviceable movie even cut way down like this. If they were smart, they’d let Roth re-assemble his R-rated cut and put it out as streaming. It might have been good, even really good.

I’ve played Tales from the Borderlands and just a bit of the first game. This doesn’t make me laugh the way the games do and I wonder how much R-rated comedy was cut. Probably tons.

Jack Black does the voice of the little robot and it was funnier in the games. Another small problem; they messed with Jack Black’s voice so much and it isn’t funny sounding.

I’ve seen many bad movies, including some from this year. I don’t see this making my bottom “worst movie” list at all. It’s just kind of average.

What a strange movie to score so low on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s currently at 9% positive crucial reviews. Metacritic has it as 27/100, marked as Generally Unfavorable.

Weird.

Trap. 42/100. It’s not just that Shyamalan (as he often does) piles one implausibility atop another, but some of the writing and dialogue are just…clunky.

There’s been lots of praise for Hartnett, but he gets a little eye-twitchy as he chews up the scenery, though overall he’s still fun to watch.

The kid who plays his daughter is great. (I was just skimming the IMDb page, and see she’s an Aussie…I had no idea!)

His daughter was fine in the pop star role.

I’m sitting outside the vet now while they bring her in and update her vaccinations, and I’m thinking about this movie, and now I’m at 35/100. I should just stop thinking about it, huh?

I think you’re okay as long as it’s just two significant digits, but if you find yourself wanting to add a decimal point just back away.

Just saw RED on NFLX. Willis, Freeman, et al. Not bad for the violent/comedy genre, albeit predictable. Watching Helen Mirren firing a .50 cal machine gun was worth the watch.

I enjoyed that when I saw it.

Completely agreed.

I don’t recommend the sequel.

GO SEE ALIEN: ROMULUS!!

That is all. :flying_saucer::alien:

Jackpot on Amazon Prime. Awkwafina and John Cena in a Jackie Chan style action comedy. Better than I expected.

Did you spot a youngish Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul) in the aircraft control room?

She was pretty actiony in Thor: Ragnarok. I thought she did a good job of it at least.

I thought it was slightly disappointing to be honest. I don’t wanna get spoilery though.

Out of curiosity, I did an image search on him (jonathan banks young) and my reaction was “That guy?” I probably saw him in lots of things and would never have recognized him as the same actor. People certainly age differently. He had just the right look for his BB & Saul character.
