Moving Blues. Any tips on moving to Reno?

This is somewhere between a whine and a MPSIMS so not much fire if that’s what you’re looking for.

Anyway I’m out of options in this town the job market is terrible and my old boss is spreading lies about me all over town (he hired me back to help set up his new hotel then he didn’t pay me what he promised then he fired me after I was done setting up his hotel and I started asking “hey where’s the money you promised?” Now he tells everyone I wasn’t doing my job which is a bald faced lie) Now I can’t even get a job interview at KMART! No kidding I applied there twice. I’ve put in three resumes a week for the last 4 months and I’ve gotten two interviews. One I was told I had the job as soon as they called my references then they called me back and told me there had been a paperwork mistake and it turned out I didn’t have the job (yeah right my fuckhead of an ex boss lied to them like he had been lying all around town).

So I’m going to Reno. If I get a decent paying job right off I can barely stave off bankruptcy though it’s doubtful I’ll succeed. I’m moving in with my brother for a month then if I haven’t found a place on my own he’ll kick me out. After that with luck my dad will take me in. That’s something I’m not looking forward to it will involve much groveling and listening to him tell me how to live my life. Considering he didn’t raise me I have a hard time listening to that. However it is time to swallow my pride if I have to. My brother thinks he can get me a gofer type job for 8 an hour with a possibility of moving up considering how much computer and tech experience I have, but the gofer job wouldn’t be full time nor would it be guaranteed I’d move up.

The questions I have are follows
First anything worth seeing right away in Reno? I’m not very interested in flashing lights but if there’s something jaw dropping I should check out I’ll go see.

Second think I should try to stave off bankruptcy so I can get an apartment with ok credit or should I just bite the bullet and get rid of the debt for a fresh start?

Third should I go for a hotel job that would probably pay more but be a dead end job or work the gofer job and hope my work ethic plus nepotism equals a job future? Or is there a better job type in Reno that a person with no current degrees can go for?

I just finished a semester of college putting me 21 credits away from a business degree. Is there any particular associates degree that actually is in demand? I was thinking getting two one in Business administration and another in Computer Science. Or should I just say “I’m 26 should just work whatever job I get and be happy if I can pay the stupid bills” (oh and just to brag a bit I took 18 credits last semester I got 5 A’s and one B and the B was in a class where 50% of the class failed. Considering I hadn’t stepped into a class in 8 years I thought that was pretty good.)

Anything in general I should know or be told?

and finally any good luck or well wishes would be appreciated. I’ve only moved once before in my life on my own and that was only two hours away to go to college the first time. Even though I made that move fine after I actually got out there I was scared out of my mind before. Now I’m sure I’ll be fine when I get down to Reno but this is a much bigger step though I’m not scared I am definitely feeling lost.

ps I’m going on the 11th.

Don’t shoot a man, just to watch him die.

I wouldn’t go to Reno. Although lacking a cite, I firmly believe that she is none other than Jimmy Hoffa in drag.

Having a bankruptcy on your record could make it very difficult to find an apartment. If you can put it off til you’re in your own place, and then file, you’d be better off.

Employment wise, consider the various driving trades. If you’ve got a clean driving record, (and even if you don’t) it shouldn’t be too hard to get a job driving a city bus or school bus or airport shuttle bus.

http://www.rtcwashoe.com/career/citilift/ Don’t know how much this pays, but it looks like they’re hiring.

Why Reno? If you like where you grew up, just move to Cheyenne, or Laramie, or Fort Collins, or somewhere. You’ll still be close to home; you’ll be in a semi-familiar area; they won’t know your ex-boss from Adam. (And it sounds to me as if it’s personal relationships that are letting him say that - most former employers don’t say much more than “yes, he worked here.”)

Well Reno because I have a support system there. Everywhere else I would be basically homeless. My Mom is here and she’s kicking me out saying she knows nobody can get a job here so she’s making me move for my own good. Trying to cling to this area is slow suicide for me right now. Reno has my dad and my brother and is supposedly expanding right now. (heh ever feel like a total loser depending on your family at 26 when you should be married and having a job you can retire on?)

As for my former boss he’s a Grade A douche. I hit him with unemployment so it’s become a goal in his life to screw up mine. I knew what to expect though when I filed the guy is younger then me and was given a hotel by his father he runs it like you’d expect a spoiled punk would run a place.

I have a clean driving record and except for no degree (yet) I have a good resume. Lots of history with accounting and customer service. As well as staying put (4 years at the hotel to start with. A year in the Wal Mart Cash office. The only thing that was short is when I quit Walmart to work for my original boss again that ended in me being fired after 4 months)

Say “hi” to Lt Dangle for me.

Well I can’t help you too much because I am too young to help with most of your questions, but since you’ll be there by Labor Day go the the Rib Cookoff. It’s a lot of fun and really awesome eats. Being so close to Tahoe, there is a lot of hiking and nature stuff up there, but I’m not sure I can really tell you all that much more, as I don’t do much of that. Personally I love and miss Reno very much (I’m in Oregon right now going to school but I’ll be back down for the summer), but that’s mostly because it’s got an amazing underground music scene and a lot of my old friends. Check out the local paper to get a feel for the town. As far as jobs go, there is a little industrial area in the (somewhat) nearby town of Fernley that has a lot of warehouses, Amazon.com is one of them, gofer type work, but it starts between 10-12 an hour and is full-time if you can get a job there.

If you do go to Reno, stay away from the cops. I saw them on one of those reality shows, and those Reno police are a bunch of weirdos.

The Reno Gazette Journal that IKinSpelGud linked to is a good place to start, and there’s another local employment site as well - they have a bunch of listings for acounting and customer service positions. Reno is growing like crazy now, and it’s getting to be peak construction season, so you could probably find a job as a laborer (or a more skilled position if you have the experience) pretty easily if you want to do that. Fernley’s about 30 miles outside of town, but there are a few closer warehouses in the Truckee Meadows, just a couple miles south of downtown.

Yup, tons of stuff, especially the hiking and nature stuff IKinSpelGud mentioned. Lake Tahoe is about 45 minutes southwest of here, and it’s simply amazing. Pyramid Lake is 45 minutes northeast, and it’s a completely different type of lake. There are hiking trails all around town, mountain ranges to the east and west, ancient petroglyphs just a mile or so outside of the city, a brand new whitewater park right smack in the middle of downtown, and a whole bunch of other options. Feel free to email me if you have specific questions (the address is in my profile).

Well, since your move may require a resume with your previous employer as a reference… running away from the state isn’t going to solve the problem.

IANAL, but check out the section on defamation here and if you have a kind friend that’s local that can get a reference out of your previous employer to see if he is in fact lying about your experience, you might have a case on your hands. I’m not sure about WY laws, but it might be worth a look into:

I live in Carson City now and previously spent 20 years in Green River and Laramie.

Carson City is way, way, way better.
The job market in the Reno area is pretty good, the unemployment rate is running around 3.5% or so. There’s a lot of construction going on. Most of the casinos are generally looking for dealers and such like. The pay sucks but tips can come to a good bit, according to a friend’s son who deals at a local casino. My understanding is that there is a fair demand here for computer type people.

Take the $8/ hr job and start some serious hunting.

This is really a good area to live in. The weather is wonderful, just enough winter to call it winter. You’ll get many a chuckle out of listening to the CA transplants crying about the cold. I’ve been here 7 years and haven’t gotten my winter coat out yet. From mid May until late October it doesn’t rain. Just one blue sky day after another. Lake Tahoe is a true sight to see. There’s loads of outdoorsy kinds of things to do. With the casinos in Reno you have a chance to see all sorts of shows, concerts, bands, and entertainers. 4 1/2 hours puts you in San Francisco.

well thank you all for the advice so far. I’ve looked through the two links and it seems like there’s plenty of work to investigate.

Keep the ideas of places to visit coming. And if anyone is in Reno feel free to look me up.

  1. Have a freind call your ex-boss pretending to be a prospective employer. if he slanders you, sue his ass.

  2. Contact your State Employment div re getting back the money he owes you. Or- just sue him in small claims

  3. Really, a Chptr7 (no asset) isn’t all that bad. It is usually better to go that route as opposed to a bunch of ‘write offs’ and “de-rogs” on your credit report.

I’ve also heard a lot of ads about RenoHelpWanted.com, but I don’t know anything about it. It might be a decent resource.

:smack: I should really check other people’s links before I post my own.
