I’ve seen this done before, but this thread reminded me of it.
It started in the Pit, but a mod decided it would be better in another forum, so they moved it. Normally I wouldn’t mind, but the Pit is a very…special place. It’s not my style of conversation, and I don’t go to that particular forum.
Reading through a thread about a cheese sandwich in IMHO, and finding Pit-worthy language and discussions, is a big turn-off.
I suggest that it would make more sense to close the thread with a note suggesting they can open a fresh one in an appropriate thread, instead of creating Pit-lite threads in non-Pit forums.
I think what you are suggesting makes a lot of sense. Especially since it wasn’t clear whether the OP was even serious about the thread in the first place.
Perhaps, but it isn’t just this thread. This has happened before.
There is a culture of posting in the Pit that doesn’t fit in other forums.
One of the posts is:
I could see a post in MPSIMS that says “Fuck sausages” if it were a thread discussing sausages, and someone didn’t like them. But It’s unlikely that “Fuck 'em right in the ass…with another sausage” would be included.
Another one is:
I’m surprised that you don’t think this would be an insult in MPSIMS. I would have suspected that this could at least produce a mod note, if not a warning, if it had been posted after the thread move instead of before.
I’m just suggesting that a thread with this language, while completely appropriate for the Pit, is really out of place and off-putting when casually reading MPSIMS.
I’m surprised it was moved, too, although I have no problem with it. I would have assumed it would be closed, especially since the point of the thread wasn’t clear at all. It looked like a case of PUI. (Posting Under the Influence)
Without the couple of posts by people trying to make it a “pit-worthy” thread, relocating to MPSIMS would have been normal and not made any stir except that the OP was apparently making a parody of some sort (?).
In general, however, I would hope mods would look at the tone of language before moving (I’m sure they do), because of the criticism you point out. People try to be edgy in the Pit in ways that doesn’t fly in other forums. Reading in MPSIMS and finding some edgy comments from before a move kinda pushes the forum boundaries a bit. YMMV.
Of course, I will point out arguing for thread closures goes right up against complaints by other posters that too many threads are closed for being pointless or whatever without a real reason and those posters would rather see threads moved and left open to live or die on their own. So basically the mods are … “sausaged”.
I actually don’t care if they close it, or just leave open to sink or swim on it’s own merits.
Since I’ve posted my support of the sink or swim policy before, I guess I should try to be consistent there…
I’m just hoping that once a thread has enough of the pit culture, it won’t get moved.
Assuming he was making fun of some other thread, I think it should have stayed in the Pit. But that’s why I think parody threads should contain links. They can be really subtle if you want, but they need to be there so the mods will know you are making fun of someone.
