Moving to Macon, GA. What can you tell me about it?

I just got the job offer today, and barring something unexpected, I will be starting Oct. 28. This means I’m going to need an apartment. I’ve driven through it a bunch of times on my way to and from Atlanta and spent sometime driving around aimlessly after the the first interview, but I don’t know a whole lot about the city.

So, tell me everything regarding actually living there. I’m single and have no kids. What’s a good neighborhood? What’s to do on my days off?

I went to college in Macon. It is hot, and humid, and hot.

Mercer University has a lot of financially well off students, and on the other side of the street are some of the poorer neighborhoods in the city. So there is a lot of ‘tension’ in the areas around the school. These are not good places to be alone after dark.

You should definitely go wander around Rose Hill Cemetery on River Street some time. It is a beautiful place and the site of an Allman Brother’s band album cover.

The city is also full of really cool old houses if you like architecture.

Unfortunately the Atlanta Braves no longer have a minor league team there. It was a fantastic park to watch a ball game in. But I hear Macon is in the preliminary stages of trying to get another minor league team. If they do, go see them. There isn’t a bad seat in that stadium.

In my experience, Macon is a great city to drive around on your way to and from Florida.
