Yes, it was in a new Gay bar in Berlin, “Dreizehn” (Thirteen), on February 28, 1981…I was having a beer (surprise, surprise) and, across the crowded room, our eyes met and somehow, I really did know he was the one. Yes, I know that is a cliché, but it is also true!
In the old days, we would now be considered those “confirmed bachelors who have been roommates for 32 years”…and today, well, we are still pretty much considered “those confirmed bachelors who have been roommates for 32 years”. The State of Nevada did make it legal for Domestic Partnerships awhile back, and we immediately registered for that.
Our hope is that the Supreme Court might give us the best, belated Anniversary gift ever sometime in June, so we can get the full legal rights.
So, I know from reading the boards that a surprising number of people here really don’t have any/many Gay friends or co-workers, so please feel free to use us as an example in conversations and say, “Well, I do know of two Gay guys who have been together for 32 years and they are very happy together!”
And we are indeed very happy together. Through the good times and bad times, in sickness and in health, we have been here for each other.
Low key celebration today. I took the day off work and we will probably go see a movie and then have dinner somewhere. We don’t need the cake or the bottle of bubbly or extravagant gift(s). After 32 years, we are still just happy to be together – and I guess that is probably the best gift we could ever really hope for!
