Mr. Jagr Goes to Washington.

Enjoy him, Caps. Hope your arena has slot machines.

I haven’t seen any other threads about the recent trade, so I thought I’d start one of my own, a bit after the fact.

Just wanted to ask if any Washington-ites have reactions to Jaromir’s transfer, be they good or bad.

Oh, and I also wanted to say that if you guys think that this means we’re not gonna stomp you in the first round once again, you’re sorely mistaken.

I don’t know much about the (two?) guys the Caps had to give up in order to deal for Jags, but my boss always sez that whenever a team gives up more than one player to get one player in return, they always come out ahead (although I’d like to hold that judgement until we see what happens with all the deals that Milbury’s made for the Islanders).
Falcon has the definitive word on Cap news however, so I defer any opinion to her when she gets back.

Speaking of which, anyone want to pass on their thoughts on the off-season tradings/signings in the NHL in general so far? Hasek? Yashin? Peca? Roenick? et al. Out here on the Far Out West, L.A.'s moves look poor, Anaheim’s appear to be okay, not losing anything, but then, they didn’t have much to lose to begin with.

I’m first and foremost a Flyers fan (Weinrich and Roenick = great moves; hopefully Clarke will dump Lindros to the Rangers and knock him silly), but I’m a Washingtonian, so I follow the Caps, too.

Great treade for the team. With Bondra and Jagr, they will finally score goals. Giving up prospects can be risky, but I think the Caps stole Jagr from the Pens.

As a Flyers fan, I can’t wait to see Mario slink back into retirement once he finds out he has no one to pass to.

I don’t know about who will benefit most from this trade, but I hope this means that ESPN the magazine will put Jagr on the cover shirtless again.

And I see Doug Weight has gone to the Blues, and so my allegiance and My Yahoo! page must change yet again.

I disagree that it was a “steal”. The Pens weren’t looking for a big-name player, because we needed to free up some payroll. As it stands now, we don’t have to pay for the three prospects, and we get some cash out of the deal.

And don’t count on Jagr just automatically producing. After all, he blamed a lot of his scoring problems on lack of support from the media. And if he’s gonna buckle under the strain of criticism from the Pittsburgh media, I hate to think what he’ll do in D.C.

And I wouldn’t get your hopes up about Mario. The Pens have plenty of good guys besides Jagr, who actually have their hearts IN the game.

I have to agree with Montfort. The deal was a steal for the Caps. The Pens could have gotten a better deal from the Rangers. I know that the move was to dump salary but 3 kids that have 4 NHL games between them? If the Pens wanted low priced youth, they could have gotten (among others) Pavel Brendl from the Rangers, and that guy is a goal scoring machine.

Now, I’m a Stars fan and I like the moves that they made, adding Turgeon, Audette and Lumme without giving up any of the core players is good. I would like to see the team add another winger (ideally Bill Guerin).

The Washington media ignores the Caps. The most likely critical question of Jagr is probably going to be “So, why are we following you instead of the Redskins?”

Anyway, it’s one marquee goalscorer out of the Atlantic Division, so I’m happy about that.
