Possibly Tarantino decided to split the film into two parts to purposely make the ending of the first movie be the scene where Bill mentions that Uma’s child (and his? Did Uma say before she was shot that it was Bill’s baby?) is still alive.
I found this a great way to end the film, it leaves the audience in suspense awaiting the second installment.
I dont think the shock of finding out her child was alive would have been as effective if it was in the middle of a longer film as aposed to the climax of part 1
Personally I felt exhausted by the end of Volume 1. I don’t think I would have been able to take on another hour and a half of that movie! Don’t get me wrong, I loved it! But I’m glad it was split up. I can’t wait for Volume 2.
Without trailers and not counting the credits Vol.1 was 1hr45min.
x’s 2 = 3 1/2 hrs: just what I’m looking for (about the same length as the LOTR special editions).
Seems just about no one in Messageboardland agrees with me. Still, even considering all of your comments, it just seems like a commercial decision to me (not surprising- I’m well aware of how these things work- it’s just I’d love to see the rules broken once in a while).
Anyway, does anyone know if there’s anything to the rumor that an en masse version will be released for a week in Los Angeles? In order to be considered for the Academy Awards a film must play in a theater in Los Angeles for at least one week before the end of the year. I read that they may release the full version just for one week in L.A. so that they could submit the whole film for consideration as one peice. I’ve got my fingers crossed. If they do it, I promise I’ll check it out and let the rest of you know whether or not it was a good idea.
I’ve not heard any such thing, however (not that I read the trades, so just because I’ve not heard it doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen). It doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to do this, either. Awards are not given to “bodies of work” (at least supposedly not) but for single films. If the Weinsteins of Miramax think there is a chance for Kill Bill to win any Oscars, why not try to repeat the Lord of the Rings success and have both films get awards seperately?
Having it considered as a “single film” would be the whole point of releasing it for Academy consideration in this manner. However, it was pretty far back when I heard this rumor and, at the time, they expected to release both volumes in 2003. There was a fear that each volume would cancel the other out when it came time for Academy consideration- votes would be split, thus hurting each volume individually.
Now that they’ve decided not to release vol.2 until 2004 this is no longer a concern. This is why I’m wondering if anybody has any updated info on this possibly abandoned plan.
Thanks for offering to keep meet company if it happens!
You’re one of my people!
I don’t think Miramax has any real hopes for Kill Bill and the Oscars. It’s just not the Academy’s type of movie, and I imagine a lot of people are skeptical of the last-minute split.
I suspect that may be one reason for the split to begin with – Miramax said, “this isn’t going to win any Oscars, so let’s see how much cash we can squeeze out of it.”
Shit shit shit shit shit. I am soooooo sorry to anyone who read my post and hadn’t seen the film. I had a complete brain explosion and didn’t even think to put the spoilers in. Im sorry if I ruined the film for anyone
