I’m getting Arabic (?) looking numerals when I add line numbers to my documents. Everything else is as should be - page numbers OK, paragraph numbers OK, but when I add line numbers - exotic script time !
I’ve tried everything, language, region etc - going out now to buy a chicken to sacrifice at midnight.
Any takers ?
Are you using MS Word 03’ or above? If so highlight the number the way you want it then click the little paint brush in your tool bar on the top and after you click it just highlight the odd number you wish to change and it will match the correct font.
I suspect Themenin is talking about the automatic Line Numbering that you set up using Page Setup | Line Numbers, and not List Numbering. Line numbers set up using Line Numbering run down the left side of the page and are not directly selectable.
Themenin, if you haven’t tried this already: there is a Style reserved for line numbering, a setting in which might be causing your problem.
-
Go to Format | Styles and Formatting and find the Line Number style (you might need to select All styles from the Show menu for it to appear).
-
Click the right-hand side and select Modify from the drop-down menu.
-
Click Format | Font and make sure the font isn’t set to something weird like Symbols or Wingdings. Click OK or Cancel.
-
Click Format | Language and make sure it’s set to US English (or whatever version you use) and not something like Arabic.
Hope this helps. (If it isn’t that, I have no idea unless it’s just something corrupt in the template. I don’t use Line Numbering that much.)
oh I see. Yes, that’s right.
Yes, I was in fact referring to line numbering as described by Vinyl Turnip. Thanks for the suggestions, but unfortunately, nothing doing.
OTOH, I now find that when I print or export as pdf, the numerals show up ‘normally’. I guess that’s good enough, but I’m still mystified as to why Word is displaying these Arabic characters.
