MS Word - need to show chapter number alongside page count

I’m doing a bit of work at the moment preparing a manuscript for an academic press. One of the press’s requirements for page numbering is that the page number also include the chapter number. So, the pages in chapter 1 should be numbered like this:

1-1
1-2
1-3
etc.

Now, the press also requires that the manuscript NOT be submitted as a single large document, but that each chapter be a separate document.

People who know MS Word probably see where this is going.

The problem is that, for Word to include the chapter number with the page number, you need to have a single document split into multiple chapters. You then make an appropriate setting in the Bullets and Numbering section, so that Word knows where the new chapters start, and Word will then include the chapter number with the page numbers.

So far, though, i have been unable to find anyway to do this for single-chapter documents. I find it hard to believe that a tool as powerful as Word won’t let me insert a “1-” before all the page numbers in the chapter1.doc document.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to do this, or am i out of luck?

Note: I’m using Word 2002.

As far as I know, this is precisely what you do. Open the footer, type in “1-” then click the icon that represents the page number. I’ll give it a shot and report back if it doesn’t work.

Yep, works for me.

You’re right. It worked!

Many, many thanks.

Is it clear yet that i’m not exactly a Word maven?

Me neither. If you had asked about anything else I probably would have been stumped.
