Hi all–I’m trying to format my dissertation for final submission to my university. You’d think defending it before my committee would be the hardest part, but nooooo… that was easy.
The problem I’m encountering is that the university’s format requires new chapters to feature the page number centered in the footer. The other pages can be paginated in the upper-right of the footer (where I normally place my page numbers). But I’m having a devil of a time getting Word to accept placing numbers in different positions on different pages.
I’ve tried to figure out how to insert section breaks, with the idea of formatting the sections differently (basically, setting up each chapter’s first page as a new section, formatting it to show the page number in the footer, and setting up the remaining of the text as sections with the page numbers in the header). But each time I try this, I end up with page numbers in both the header and the footer of each page, regardless of the section.
I’m about to scream.
Anybody know how to resolve this? Thanks for any ideas.
I working with Office 2003, so the exact commands may differ for you, but here is the best way to resolve the issue:
Select File > Page Setup to bring up the Page Setup dialog box.
Select the Layout tab.
Select the Different First Page checkbox.
If all of chapters are in one file, select Whole document from the Apply to drop-down list so that this layout is applied to each new chapter (assuming each Chapter is a separate section). If each chapters is a stand alone document, apply the above steps in each file.
This allows you to have different running heads/feet on the first page. Set the footer on the first page with the page number centered at the bottom. Set the header on all other pages to have the page number to the far right, with no page number in the footer.
Am I reading the OP correctly? How are you ending up with page numbers in both the header and the footer if you’re only trying to put them in the footer? (In other words, please provide appropriate repro steps.)
FWIW, when I was writing my thesis lo those many years ago, I gave up entirely on using Word and ended up buying a used copy of FrameMaker. It was totally worth it.
Skopo,
as a fellow art historian (right? Do I rememeber this right?) hoping to file this spring, I suggest you just leave the page number in the center footer on all pages. I think it will keep UMI happier. I think my university actually requires this.
Congratulations.
