A friend of mine wants to insert page numbers but he wants to start with A, B, C, D and then switch to 1, 2, 3, etc.
I played around with it and got the darn thing to work - but I can’t reproduce it. Can anyone tell me how this is done?

Create a new section for each area of the document that you want to have a different page numbering style. Creating the section is probably the step you missed, after that it’s pretty straightforward.
This is the right start. BUT the pitfall many people miss, is that you have to “break the links” between the footers of the different sections. By default, Word will set up each following section’s footers to “same as previous.” That means that each following section will be identical to the one before it, and if you mess with say Section 3 and it’s set to “same as previous” then it will go back and change Section 2 (and 1 if 2 is linked to 1.)
To get each footer in each section to be different, there’s a little button on the “header/footer toolbar” that says “same as previous” and make sure that button is set to off. If the footer says “same as previous” at the upper right hand (or left hand, I forget) of the footer, you know you need to hit that button and break the link between it and the previous footer section. Once you’ve got all of your sections set so that they don’t say “same as previous” then you can fool with each section’s footer at will without affecting any of the other sections.
I seem to be able to do this consistently now. I’ll type it up and send it off. Thanks guys.
Sounds like you probably know this, but just in case not. Note that the form of the page number is set from Insert - Page Number - Format. Then, most importantly, you hit Close (not OK), so the placement of the page number is controlled by the header/footer. If you hit OK, you’ll put in a second set of page numbers.
Ack, that’s unclear in an important way. On the Insert - Page Number - Format sub-dialogue, you hit OK. This returns you to the Insert - Page Number dialogue. THAT’S the one where you hit Close (not OK).
