Page count in MS word

In about an hour, I need to go help a guy reformat some WordPerfect files into Word files. He’s freaking out about the pagination being correct, and frankly, I don’t know how to change or omit specific page numbers. Any advice, tips or tricks for dealing with MS Word’s (Presumably on XP, but I’m not sure) page counter/numbering stuff would make my job way easier.

havn’t used wordperfect in years but to do page numbers in ms word just select “insert” from the top menu and you should see “page numbers…” the choices are pretty straight forward

Is there anyway to not put numbers on certain pages? I, too, am not very experienced with Word, but being young and able to type makes me the computer guru here

Oy. Unfortunately, this is not simple.

Important to know. Word inserts page numbers in two different ways: directly and through headers/footers. The former are easy to do but have limited formatability; the latter are trickier to do but more flexible. Sounds like you’re going to need the latter. I’d start reading Help files now. The page number entries will be easy; the header/footer entries less so.

Oh, and just so you know, depending on how many sections the document has, Word sometimes gets buggy about letting you access them. The trick is to go to the end of the document, access the H/F’s from there, and work towards the front of the document.

Sorry, I didn’t design this program. I don’t even get a share of the royalties.

As for how not to put a page number on a page, you control that with sections (Insert - Break - Section). You then modify the H/F to remove the page number. Note that, every time you insert a section, Word assumes you want it to use the same H/F’s as the previous section. So, first you have to unlink the H/F’s (it’s one of the commands on the H/F formatting bar), then modify. Otherwise, you’ll be taking the page number out of both sections.

Repeat, I do not get any of the royalties.

thanks

I’m off to give it a shot now. I’ll let you know how it goes

So…short description: Abject failure.
I checked the sections…63 of them. Realizing that setting footers to not follow the previous one would work, but be ridiculously time consuming, I went searching around for another solution. Couldn’t find anything that would work, so I told the guy, “Sorry, but this is out of my area of expertise. I’ll email you our list of computer gurus, maybe one of them can help.”
Went back to the office, emailed him the list, resulting in the long answer: Got to skip out of an hour of work without doing anything, so not all bad.
