MUDs???

Hey guys…

Who here amongst all this knowledge and brainpower can tell me all I ever wanted to know about MUDs, but was afraid to ask?

I, as some of you others here, played an online game/forum called Pyroto for about two years. However, for reasons that I’d rather not go into here, I no longer participate at that site.

I’m looking for something similar to Pyroto, although I know there’s nothing else like it online. I’ve been interested in MUDs for about two years, but have never had the nerve to just dive in to anything without a little prior knowledge. So far my research has only turned up the basics. I’m looking for an actual current or x-player who can tell me what it’s really like beyond the “Telnet Veil” and into the Realm itself.

Is there a since of community? Are there downsides to the experience? I want a long term place where I can go and socialize and interact with others who are there to have fun and enjoy the place. Are there MUDs like that out there? Hmm?

I’ve been investigating an old MUD at http://www.dragonfire.com It seems to be a pretty neat place, but you never know until you fire up that Telnet. I’m wary about taking the leap…

There will always be a downside…and it will usually come disguised as politics.

Maybe this will help, though:

Most public MUDS are listed (by size, genre, and type,) as are FAQs, MUD administration/coder openings, and MUD reviews.

I used to play on a MUD that was themed on the Wheel of Time book series. It was a PK MUD, but not hostile if you are not a huge tool.

It was called Fires of Heaven I think.

I only quit because my keyboard had an unfortunate Mountain Dew related accident. :frowning:
