Recently, two male vultures in the Muenster city zoo began building a nest together. Zoo officials have decided to send one of them to be mated with a female vulture at a Czech zoo in need of baby vultures. It should be added local authorities did nothing to stop homophobic vultures in the same cage from harassing the same sex couple by stealing material from their nest.
Though largely indifferent to the gay rights movement, I am very much in favor of personal liberty. Undoubtedly these two vultures entered into a same sex relationship voluntarily, and as both are fourteen years old they can reasonably be considered adults. The state has no business telling consenting adults what they can or can’t do in their homes, and it should not matter that their home is a cage in a zoo. It is quite bad enough that the authorities did nothing to protect the couple from harassment, but to deliberately split them up and force one of them into a heterosexual relationship against his will is an open display of brutal repression unseen since the Nazi era.
I say the United States should recall its ambassador from Germany until such a time as the German nation rights this grievous wrong.
