I am looking for software that will allow me to edit music I have recorded into my computer (MP3’s, etc). I may also want to splice songs or bits of songs together. Any recommendations?
Well, it depends on price.
Sound Forge 5.0 is a great program, but it’s more for hardcore editing, such as splicing, cleaning up sound quality, etc. The upsides are that it comes with a good set of audio editing tools and plug-ins, but the downsides are the cost (450 bucks), and the fact that since the previews are realtime, they suck up resources like no tomorrow.
Maximum PC gives it an 8 out of 10, which is pretty good. So if you’re willing to shell out the dough, then this is prog for you. If you want something cheaper, I recommend heading to http://www.maximumpc.com and checking out some of the reviews there. Hope this helps.

Goldwave is a great program for what you want to do. Very easy to use and very inexpensive.
Don’t know exactly what you want to do, but you should probably check out Cool Edit 2000.
try http://www.buzz2.com apparently the best music editing software + its freeware

I still use SoundEdit 16!
My first computer was a Commodor64, with no hard drive. They had not invented them yet.
I got a program disc from a friend, who copied it from someone else. It had a a real nice, simple program that came with around 20 songs and an editor.
You could play the songs and watch the written music scroll by, as each note was highlighted. You could either write your own tunes, copy and adapt an existing one or copy and rework one on the disk.
I lost the disk and I don’t recall the name of the program but I got it around 88 or 89. Right before laptops were invented.
I’d like to find it again because it was fun to use.
