I’m looking for some really basic and free sound editing software that will run on my shiny new eMac running OS X.2. I need it to be able to let me work on mp3s, WAVs and Mac-format sound files, including converting the latter two back and forth between file types and to allow me to merge files of different types into single files in mp3 format. I don’t need any bells and whistles (except insomuch as I might want to use the sounds of bells and whistles) although the ability to equalize volumes would be nice but is not critical. Did I mention that this needs to be free?

I like Goldwave. It’s shareware, and does everything I need it to. I don’t know if it works on Mac, but if it does, I’d use that.
You should be able to find it fairly easily through Google.
I agree with the Goldwave recommendation without reservation.
