Music for a Doper's funeral

I’ll most likely write my own song to be sung at my funeral, which will involve my body, wrapped in white linen, being dropped into a shallow hole in the middle of Texas hill country.

“Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds.
Although “It’s The End of the World as We Know It” is pretty cool, too.

katiekilldare, that would have been one my choices, except that I’m a guy. Great pick.

Hmm…

First for my funeral to start I want
Gomer Pyle to sing Back Home Again in Indiana

During the service
Rose Tint My World
Meatloaf’s Bat out of Hell
Shakira’s Whatever, Whenever
Ghostbusters Theme
Cabaret
Pure Imagination
Ghost Riders in the Sky
Roses Cantina

Then, as my casket is whizzed down the aisle on a motorized deatkart I want the A-Team theme playing!
And in the hearse ride to the cemetry (Fast F’ing drive speed limit or sl+5, I’ve never held up traffic in my life and I won’t start now) there’ll be an incecream man PA system playing Convoy and Eastbound and Down.
And as a team of midgets lowers my casket into the hole, the oompa loompa song.
(These aren’t necessarily my best/favorite songs, just ones I like that would fit)

Oh and somewhere I’ve got to work in Blondie’s one way or another-cuz if anyone’s coming back ot haunt your ass it’s goin to be me.

As my coffin is borne to the grave, I want them to play “Rock n Roll Part 2” by Gary Glitter. I want the pallbearers to walk and sway in time to the music.

As the coffin is lowered in, I want the Marine Hymn played. I wasn’t in the Marines, but I really enjoyed “Heartbreak Ridge.”

Then at the reception afterwards, nothing but Beastie Boys, Tragically Hip, AC/DC, and some Michael Jackson songs from “Off the Wall” and “Thriller.” Also some Duran Duran, just to mix it up a little, a few selections from “Seven and the Ragged Tiger.”

I am absolutely, 100% serious.

My only absolute request is bagpipes. Amazing Grace is fine, but I don’t have to have that particular song. Just so long as there’s something on the pipes.

And for the more somber part of the ceremony (mostly, I want to have a good ol’ Irish wake), I think that Bach’s Komm, Susser Tod would fit nicely.

All in all, interesting choice of songs. However, I can’t believe that nobody has mentioned the song that I most would like to be performed at my own funeral…

Monty Python’s Always look on the bright side of life !

JoseB

The one ceremony that you can be absolutely sure you are not going to be alive for and you are trying to dictate what music is played!

You people are so selfish

Black Muddy River by The Dead.

If not that, then Dirt by Phish.

I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned already…

“Another one bites the dust”, anyone???

Is it just me or does anyone else think it’d be funny for a chick’s funeral to have the benny hill song play while the pallbearers skitter around the church.

Ok, so it is just me.

I’d also like a Viking funeral. Musicaly,I’d like some Pogues, The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn and If I Should Fall From Grace With God at least.
I don’t have a wife or kids so I can blow the life insurance on beer (Dopers welcome!)

“Sugar Mountain” Neil Young
“Sound of Silence” Tom & Jerry
“Rust Never Sleeps” Neil Young
"“Please don’t bury me” John Prine
"Don’t Murder Me"Greatful Dead

Yes, that’s the one! I’m not a churchgoer, so I figured someone would recognize it - thanks!

Well, I was at a funeral two days ago and they played this.

amazing grace with pipe and drum

Metallica - Orion

Grateful Dead - Black Muddy River

Don McLean - Starry Night

Jane Monheit - Somewhere over the rainbow

Pink Floyd - Brain Damage/Eclipse zoe, Gig was on The Wall

Billie Holiday - God Bless the Child

John Lee Hooker - I cover the Waterfront

Chris Cornell’s version of - Ave Maria

Kurt Elling and Von Freeman - Goin to Chicago (off KE’s Live in Chicago)

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Life by the Drop

Bosstones - Rascal King

In Australia at least, Amazing Grace is one of the most popular funeral songs around. (I’ve heard it at a number of funeral, including my mother’s.)

 - I’d love to see their faces Gorgon Heap. I think you’d just have to laugh which I suppose might be a nice thing at a funeral.

I know it’s clichéd but I think a live performance of Mozart’s Requiem would be cool - with really good choir and orchestra. Pity I wouldn’t be alive to hear it. That’s just fantasy anyway.

In reality I’d just like something appropriately sedate and beautiful like a solo stringed instrument or something played by a family member or friend.

“My Way”, as belted out by Sid Vicious
“If I Should Fall From The Grace Of God” by The Pogues
“Always Something There To Remind Me” by Naked Eyes
“Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House
“Here Comes The Sun” by Nina Simone
“Troy” by Sinead O’Conner
“Goodbye, Goodbye” by Oingo Boingo
Theme song from the Pink Panther by Henry Mancini
If I were female I’d also add “She’s Gone” by Hall & Oates.

buttonjockey, Great Gig in the Sky is from DSOTM. It’s the last track on side 1.

My songs:

Allman Brothers Band - Jessica
Dropkick Murphys - The Torch
Elvis Costello - Shipbuilding
Marshall Tucker Band - This Ol’ Cowboy
Mouthwash - We Evolve
Operation Ivy - Vulnerability (only if I die from being hit by a car)
Pinhead Gunpowder - MPLS Song
Pink Floyd - Us and Them
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights (don’t know why, but this is a good funeral song)
