Music for Heroism? (Super, or otherwise)

“Music for Supervillainy” seemed to be fairly popular, so I’ll follow it up with this’n.

That is…do any Dopers have some suggestions for good, old fashioned, charging to the rescue in shining armor on a white horse music?

My picks, so far:

•“Holding out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler
•“Escape” from the soundtrack to Plunkett and Macleane
•“Heroes” by David Bowie
•The main theme from the Superman movie. (As composed by John Williams. 'Natch.)
-Actually, there are quite a few superhero-movie soundtrack themes that would work well, for some strange reason.
•The action music from The Black Hole. (Composed by John Barry, of 007 fame.)
So…anyone else?

Many years back, we actually created a mix tape of music of heroes and villains for our son. Both wonderful music and cheesy, like:

  • Superman theme by John Williams and Superman theme from 1950s George Reeves TV show
  • Batman theme by Danny Elfand and ditto from the the 1960s Adam West TV show
  • Indiana Jones theme
  • James Bond 007 theme
  • Robin Hood theme from “Adventures of Robin Hood” by Korngold (the Errol Flynn movie)
  • Theme from “Fahrenheit 451” (the Truffaut movie, music by Bernard Hermann)
  • Theme from “North by Northwest”
  • God’s theme from Elmer Bernstein’s 1957 score for “The Ten Commandments”
  • “Zorro” theme from Disney TV show

Well, I said, both wonderful and cheesy.

Orff’s Carmina Buana (esp O Fortuna) works well for heros and villans. The film Excalibur puts it to really good use.
Bach’s Fuge in C minor (I think) the organ masterpiece is great for any time you’re rushing into battle against superior foes with only justice on your side.
Just about everything by Queen related to the Highlander movie, esp Princes of the Universe.

The William Tell Overture (aka the “Lone Ranger Theme”) of course.

I’ll also throw out The Ride of the Valkyries and possibly Mars: Bringer of War (The Planets).

Give a listen to the excellent soundtrack Basil Poledouris created for Conan the Barbarian. Great, heroic music. Also good for driving.

I always have to stifle the urge to leap up and yell whenever “Saving the Day” comes on at the start of the final showdown in Ghostbusters.

Also Sprach Zarathustra

(That’s the monolith theme from 2001:Space Odyssey)

… and how could I forget most of the music from the Spaghetti Westerns.
dadidadidadoo wow wow whow

Jeez, music villain music gets 63 posts, and hero music only gets 8? Good is dumb.

And…I just wanted to add that a few portions of the last movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony would seem to work.

That, and the theme from Bonanza. (Which makes this only time that Bonanza and Beethoven are ever going to be mentioned in the same post. Ever.)
