Well lets just say im a really odd teenager, in that i dont ever listen to music and i have no knowledge of music beyond the newspapers. Cant tell the difference between Elvis and Nirvana kind of ignorance. Recently though ive found myself wanting to have something to listen to while working/wasting time/surfing the net, but like i said the problem is that i know nothing at all about music, including what my taste in music is. I dont understand all the types and divisions and styles. All these artists and bands that keep appearing and disappearing, and breaking up and so on and so forth… Well they confuse me.
What im hoping is that someone can give me the names of good performers in most of the mainstream genres so i can have a listen and get to grips with what the genres sound like and find out what i do and dont like. If anyone has a quicker way to accomplish what im trying to do, i would love to hear that too.
Thanks very very much for any help.
I hope ive not been too incoherent above, i know what im trying to say but the words dont seem to fit.
Jazz: Ella Fitzgerald(vocalist), Charlie Parker (sax), Wynton&Ellis Marsalis (piano)-the snoopy record is my favourite of theres. (just to name a few)
Blues: BB King, Norah Jones (voice, she can be jazz too)
Classical: The Planets (first classical cd I bought)
POP: I would get a cd with lots of different artists on it, but I don’t listen to pop so I can’t really help you there but Alicia Keys, is one of the only ones I like
beatles
rolling stones
led zepplin
deep purple
sweet
bob marley & the wailers
ramones
clash
van halen
run dmc
pixies
nirvana
radiohead
these are considered main stream bands but notable bands who spwaned lots of people making music their career…since you are unsure what you may like…these bands are a mix of different styles…but all in all its rock n roll…dont worry to much about labeling of music…its just a way of catergorizing and marketing bands…hope this helps
Perhaps this is an obvious suggestion, but why not try the radio? Radio stations usually have a specific format, and generally play the most popular music from each genre. You can find online radio stations at Radio Locator. From there you can decide what you like and dislike. I personally like almost any music, with the exception of heavy metal and ganta rap.
Z, You really need to Hone in on the Genre, then we the Dopers
can make some good suggestions.
When I’m netting,I don’t like songs with overly expressive words.
For this, I like ELECTRONICA or FUSION or related music.

You could try SHOUTCast! and just pick a random genre to listen to for a while. If you like what you hear, write down the artist and title. Switch stations every once in a while to get a feel for a range of genres.
It’s WinAmp-based, but WinAmp is a free download, so no problem.
If you are pretty much starting a zero, I have no idea where to send you. It’s like saying, “I’m interested in trying out this thing called food. What is good food”? All answers are both wrong and right in that case.
You’ll end up with tons of suggestions here… check em out and come back to us with a “I kinda like Radiohead, can you suggest some stuff like Radiohead?” kind of question… then we can talk.
Oh yeah, my one big suggestion is for you to go and see some music live. That’s the real way to “get it”.
Good luck
