Music tastes – turn me on to something new

What I’m really looking for is workout music. My general tastes are fairly well defined, I’m die hard rock fan, and have the Lez Zeppelin T-shirt to prove it. But my workout music is a special subclass… I ain’t going to sweat my ass off to Kashmir or Sympathy for the Devil.

Here’s the game: Take a look at one of my workout playlists, analyze the style of music, and point me toward something else that you think fits in, but I might not have heard before.

Jet – Cold Hard Bitch, Are You Gonna Be My Girl, others
Buck Cherry – Crazy Bitch, Lit Up, others
The Strokes – Juicebox, Heart in a Cage
The Vines – Ride, Get Free
Wolfmother – Woman
The Hives – Hate To Say I Told You So
Velvet Revolver – Slither, Dirty Little Thing, others
Seether – Remedy
Pearl Jam – World Wide Suicide

Oh, one more rule… I’m only looking for newer music. Assume I know that if I like Velvet Revolver, I know about STP, etc. Ideas?

Hmm, I can’t say I’ma fan of anybody on your list, but I get the idea.

They broke up years ago, but hardly anybody knows about them. I would suggest Mclusky. Especially the songs To Hell With Good Intentions, Without MSG I Am Nothing, and Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues.

LCD Soundsystem is more dance-rock, but they’ve got some pretty stomping stuff, too.

You generally can’t go wrong with Sleater-Kinney. Get their last album, The Woods, if you’re into more of a 70’s vibe.

Oneida combine some crazy krautrock stuff with insanely intense riffing. See them live if you ever get the chance. Their drummer is unbelievable.

Try We Are Scientsist - punchy rock, very danceable, much like Jet in their ability to get you to move, although not really in sound - maybe sample “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt” or “It’s a Hit”

I see you you’re not adverse to Australian rock bands - give Faker a go - “Hurricane”, “The Familiar”, “Enough”, “Bodies” and “Quarter To Three” would all be good.

A few others that spring to mind:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Honeybear, Phenomena
Razorlight - To the Sea
The Go! Team - Junior Kickstart

I think you might enjoy Clutch’s latest output. Try any of Pure Rock Fury, Blast Tyrant and Robot Hive/Exodus.

Try a little Veruca Salt (90s chick rock) - “Volcano Girls” and “Seether” were their big hits. Fountains of Wayne have some slightly-less-aggressive rock – it crosses over to pop in lots of places – but you might like “Red Dragon Tattoo,” or “Maureen”, and you’re probably sick to death of “Stacy’s Mom.” They’ve got another ten or twenty songs you might love and another thirty or forty that you won’t. Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer are also poppy but great - my favorite track of theirs is “Moment”. Here’s another vote for Spoon as well, who totally stole John Bonham’s drum riff in their song “Back to the Life”. Beck’s “E-Pro” from his latest album is awfully aggressive, too, but may be too slow for this mix.

Oh, and for your cooldown song, you have got to take a listen to The Greenskeepers singing “Lotion”. It steals its chorus from Silence of the Lambs, and it makes “Possum Kingdom” sound like a campfire song.

p.s. Are you trying to make a stripper-music playlist?

Judging by the bands you listed, I’d strongly recommend Dirty Pretty Things’ debut album, Waterloo to Anywhere. It just came out and it’s great.

I find that Franz Ferdinand’s You Could Have It So Much Better makes a great workout soundtrack.

Also, Gavin Rossdale’s new band Institute released their debut Distort Yourself last year but no one seems to know about it. Definitely worth a listen.

Does the fact that I’m a Gavin Rossdale groupie invalidate everything I have to say about music? :stuck_out_tongue:

Hm, how about

30 Seconds To Mars - The Kill
AFI - Miss Murder
Lostprophets - Rooftops

Thirding Spoon. Great, great band.

Also, try Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Hot Hot Heat, Audioslave and The White Stripes.

Hmm…

This may be a little less polished rock than the bands you listed, but Art Brut would have the requisite energy for workout music.

You might also enjoy Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines, The Futureheads.

I thought this was a typo and was just about to make some crack along the lines of ‘haha! you mean the all-girl tribute band, right’. But I looked it up and… errr… that’s what it is.

Yup, that isn’t a typo.

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations so far. It will take me a little while to find some clips or whatnot to listen to. I’ll report back as soon as I do.

KidneyThieves have a few tracks that would be good, especially “S + M (A Love Song)”.

So I’m not the only one tickled by the line “you’re the only one with no trousers on?”

If the OP likes the Vines and the Strokes I think “I Wanna Tear You Apart” by She Wants Revenge might be a good song.

Seether? Sodium’s “Anyway” and Mercury’s “Automatic Savior.”

I can’t put a finger on why, but Jet might be a good match to Damien Rice’s “Woman Like a Man” (download this one here), and The Pink Spiders’ “Little Razorblade” too.

The Hives? “In The Backseat” by The Vacancy (download it here.)

Juliette and the Licks might be something you’d like to check out. It’s got the vibe you’re looking for. It’s Juliette Lewis’ (Natural Born Killers) band. The band rocks, and Juliette’s pretty good… really not as bad as you’d expect.

They have a new album coming out, but I really dig her songs “Comin’ Around” and “Shelter Your Needs” (Her Scientology bent comes out a little in the lyrics to this rocker.) off of the E.P. …Like a Bolt of Lightning.

Awesome! I’m a diehard rock fan too (though maybe a bit softer than you), and I’m always looking for more stuff outside the mainstream, but I never know where to go. I’ve got some poppy dance music in there, which may or may not be your thing. Here’s my workout playlist (minus some of the cheesy 80’s pop that I have a soft spot for, minus some of the the old stuff, and minus the stuff you’ve already got)…it’s not all rock, so you might not want to download everything there or anything, but you might see some stuff there that you know and want to include.

Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
Beck - Mixed Bizness
Brandtson - Earthquakes & Sharks

OK, I’ve done some searching and some downloading. Legal downloading. As far as you know. Nah, seriously, legal downloading.

Spoon – Good stuff! I’m actually surprised I’ve missed it, but if nothing else, this find makes the thread worthwhile.

Audioslave, The White Stripes, Beck, and Razorlight were good suggestions, so good in fact, I’m already listening to them. I just didn’t have them on the playlist I included.

I’m still trying to decide if I like We Are Scientists. Maybe. I’ve got to listen to more.

Clutch – Man, what a near miss. I was liking it a lot before I came to the sad realization that the lead singers voice was bugging me. From then on I was too distracted.

Veruca Salt –Yep, I know them. I have both those tunes somewhere. They kind of remind me of Republica. They didn’t rate my workout playlist, but I like(d) them. I guess they are gone?

Lost Prophets – Like it. Bought The New Transmission for starters.

Damien Rice – I’ll circle back and check it out again when I’m looking for slower stuff. I liked it.

Pink Spiders – More like The Stokes than Jet, aren’t they? But yes I liked them. I remember hearing Little Razorblade before.

The Vacancy – Another near miss, another lead singer I don’t like singing over music I do.

I actually managed to find something from every suggestion, and even many of those I didn’t mention were quite good, they just didn’t fit what I’m looking for right at the moment. Thanks to everyone who has responded so far.

Glad you like Spoon. I am totally in love with that band. To me, every song is just phenominal. Good live, too.
