The cello is my favorite orchestral string instrument, but I sure as hell would be shocked if grand piano lost to it.

What’s with all the damn cello fans who didn’t even vote for cello? For getting the least number of votes in this round (and anybody is free to do their own recount…I sort of rushed it so I may have been off by a vote or two), there sure seem to be a lot of complainers! Infact what’s with the cello fanboys at all? Cello is an okay instrument, but it a whole different world from the piano.
It’s the vocal minority. They make a lot of noise, but the numbers speak louder.
Dude, you are so wrong. Cello is SEXY. Warm, mellow sounds with a fretless fingerboard so you can turn the notes to liquid. Bow it and it can cry or sing, pluck it and it can laugh. It is also a very good looking instrument and gets bonus points for being both portable and played between the knees (again, sexy)
Piano, on the other hand, has almost zero sex apeal. You MUST strike the string to get a note, and that strike can only be made loud or soft and nothing more (a little bit of sustain, but even then nothing like the cello). As neat as loud/soft is (and, yeah, it’s neat) it is, in the end, mechanical and lacks the humanity of any string instrument. Even brass and woodwinds have more life in them. Piano sounds pretty, and good piano playing is impressive and GREAT piano playing can get past the mechanical nature of the insturment sometimes even bending that nature to the musician’s will, but on the whole piano is boring. Like acoustic guitar. It’s ordinary and often not played well because it is too easy to play passably without any real skill.
Also, for portability, it blows.
Actually, everyone who has complained about cello losing, both here and in the Finals thread (basically the same people), did vote for it.
Well it still got less votes in this round than even drumkit…so obviously not everyone feels its the best instrument. Still keeps the viola tho…
I have a portable piano. Its Virtual Piano software on my phone…i play it with a stylus.
