So, I was just sitting in my office working and listening to my handy-dandy little MP3 player. The player is a bit old and only has about 512 megs of memory, so I reload it every few days to make sure I always have fresh music. I usually leave it on shuffle as well.
So, I turn it on, and it starts by playing “Going The Distance” by Cake. Excellent. So, I’m rocking out to that. Next, it plays “Rock is Dead” by Marilyn Manson. Cool, I love this song’s beat, so I crank it up. Then comes on the next song: “Keep on the Sunny Side” from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. My co-workers were probably wondering why I started cackling like an idiot. Then, the MP3 player seemed to gather its wits about it, and played “The New Pollution” by Beck. I’m still trying to figure out why I loaded such an eclectic set of music as I did. I normally go for a theme.
So, tell me your tales of music whiplash, whether it involves hearing two songs strung together that shouldn’t be, or maybe a song being played in an inappropriate venue (like people choosing “Every Breath You Take” by The Police for their first dance at their wedding  ).
Years and years ago I was driving home from college. My trusty AM radio was playing the soothing soulful Roberta Flack singing “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” As the song ended with Flack’s refain “your face…your face…your face.” without so much as a howdy-do, the DJ let fly the next song - Blue Swede’s version of Hooked on a Feeling."
My Shuffle just segued from Blue Oyster Cult committing suicide in Don’t Fear the Reaper, meeting aliens in Agents of Fortune, and destroying Tokyo in Godzilla, to Dave Brubeck breezing through Take Five. Yes I was playing the tracks in alpha order, why do you ask?
There is a radio station in town (KYDS) that is run by students at one of the local high schools. It has without a doubt the most eclectic playlist you will ever hear. It’s not uncommon to hear something along the lines of a Korn-Frank Sinatra-Chuck Berry-Kate Smith set.
It’s fantastic, but can be almost painful at times, trying to switch musical gears that quickly.
I have very eclectic tastes- my favorites at the moment are punk rock, showtunes, and angsty girl music. On my playlist, it’s not uncommon to have something with screaming guitars and raw-throat “singers” and then switch immediately to, say, Into the Woods or Ratime.
my favorite was when it switched straight from a song called “Angels Fck and Devils Kiss" which ends with the singer screeching "fck you! f*ck you!!” and to “I Don’t Want To Live on the Moon” from Sesame Street.
Because of all the J-Pop in my playlists, this happens quite frequently.
Recently:
I’ve Suffered Long Enough by **Razed in Black ** was followed immediately by Fruits Candy, the third season ending theme of Card Captor Sakura. ("TIP TAP! Koi da itsudatte candy - FURU-TSU no you ni tasty!") Divide by **Assemblage 23 ** followed by Ryu Kumon’s theme from Ranma 1/2 - Battle Renaissance. Punk As Fuck by *the Vandals ** followed by Extrication * by Megumi Hayashibara.
Those who know the songs will probably get a giggle, but know I’m being honest, since I could seriously come up with worse if I were lying. Like pairing up any Razed in Black ** with Groovy! (CCS), or KMFDM ** against Tenchi Muyo’s Call Me Princess (wait… that might work), or perhaps something by **AC/DC ** softened up by Skuld’s Tsukamaranai yo!
What, English only? sigh that’s no fun. Okay. **Jon Brion’s ** *Here We Go * followed by Chupacabras by Chixdiggit. That was quite a jolt. **Chaka Khan’s ** *Ain’t Nobody * felt cheapened next to *When The Cows Come Home * by Blur. And I think **Graham Coxon ** ate the Pet Shop Boys ** alive when his Jamie Thomas followed Liberation. Ouch.
