Must-See Shows in Chicago

Mrs. HeyHomie and I will be taking a weekend trip to Chicago April 28-30, 2006. Any must-see theater shows that anyone wants to reccomend? We’re doing Blue Man Group one night. It doesn’t look like Cirque du Soleil will be in town that weekend.

Any suggestions?

Here’s a list of the major shows in Chicago right now. Personally, I would recommend Blue Man Group, Fences, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Spamalot, Movin’ Out, Secret Garden, or Spinning Into Butter. Hope this helps!

Actually, just to nitpick my own post, for the New York shows that site only shows what’s currently running, but apparently for Chicago it also lists upcoming shows. So be sure to check the dates to make sure they’ll be around when you’re going to be there.

Tony & Tina’s Wedding looks promising. Any thoughts?

I actually knew a couple named Tony & Tina. They got married.

Eh. It’s basically in interactive Italian wedding. You go there, you meet the bride and groom (who pretend to know you because you were “invited” to the wedding). Then you eat rigatoni and garlic bread and dance at the reception while the actors–er, I mean members of the wedding–pretend to fistfight and argue. Not my cup of tea, but if you’re into the interactive thing you may like it.

It sounds like you’re interested in big, snazzy shows, but I cannot possibly recommend Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind highly enough.

It was my experience that the best thing about the Chicago theater scene was the more offbeat stuff…the midnight shows, the improv, stuff like that. You can see the latest tours most anywhere.

I like “Seinfeld” at 6:30 and 11:00 Monday through Thursday on Fox.

Seriously, though, I second “Too Much Light…” I’ve seen it several times now and it’s always been great.

Seconded. Plus one of my former co-workers is in the cast. Tons of fun, different every week, and you can’t beat the price for theater. (Well, you can, of course, but not of that caliber in my book.)

Hy. Larry. Us.

Also, if Lookingglass is doing anything, see it if you have to kill for tickets.

A friend of mine is playing the Wizard in WICKED…I haven’t seen the show, but have heard it is very good.
