There is a town near where I live where they are trying to pass a law that every dog over 20 or 30 lbs. would have to be on a lease and have on a muzzle when not in a fenced yard or indoors. Are there even muzzles that fit flat faced dogs like pugs* and bulldogs?
I have a Boston Terror who hates to have his nails trimmed. I have to take him to the vet, where they give him valium and put a muzzle on him. His face is practically flat… so they use a cat muzzle. Contact your vet or local animal shelter to see if they know where to get one. I’ve never seen a cat muzzle in the pet store, but then again, I’ve never really looked for one.
You might also be able to make one with some strips of cloth and some velcro, if you’re handy with a needle and thread.
MHO: Sounds like a stupid law to me. Most brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dogs have breathing problems under the best of circumstances. Putting a muzzle on a dog like that sounds dangerous. I’d probably campaign against the ordnance and get a note from my vet that a muzzle might put my dogs’ lives in danger. In fact, the airlines won’t even fly Bostons, pugs, bulldogs or any other snub-nosed dog – because of the potential breathing problems.
As if an overweight pug needs a muzzle – AFAIK those are possibly the friendliest, nicest dogs in existence.
