My 2000 Major League Baseball All-Star Team

You know that I tried my best to pick the most worthy players rather than just pick guys I like because there isn’t a single Yankee on the team - and two evil red Sox players!

I know you ain’t supposed to vote for starting pitchers, but I felt like it, so sue me.

_Position__ ____American League____ ___National League___

Third Base T. Glaus (Angels) K. Caminiti (Astros)

How does this compare to your team?

Yer pal,

No MacGwire at 1st base?!!! No Griffey or Sosa in the outfield?!!! How dare you ignore the dogma and knee jerk reactions of voting in players based on the number of HRs they hit and instead base your choices on a player’s all-around ability to play the sport!

That said. I’d prefer to see Biggio at second instead of Alfonzo. And more Cardinals all-round, just cuz I’m a st Louisan.

PS Thanks for putting Edmonds in the outfield. I thought only people in St Louis were noticing how well he’s played all year. You didn’t happen to see that great catch he made a couple games ago vs the D-Backs, didja? He ran from deep left-center to far right center to make a diving catch. The run scored from third, but he made the first out and cost the batter a double, putting an end to the rally and the Cards went on to win.

Let’s just try this nifty little code thingy and see how it turns out.

_Position__ ____American League____ ___National League___
First Base R. Palmeiro(Rangers) T. Helton (Rockies)
Second Base L. Alicea (Rangers) J. Vidro (Expos)
Shortstop A. Rodriguez (Mariners) R. Gutierrez (Cubs)
Third Base T. Glaus (Angels) C. Jones (Braves)
Catcher J. Varitek (Red sox) M. Piazza (Mets)
Outfield J. Dye (Royals) J. Edmonds (Cardinals)
             D. Erstad (Angels) A. Jones (Braves)
             C. Everett (Red Sox) V. Guerrero (Expos)
Pitcher P. Martinez (Red Sox) R. Johnson (D-backs)

I’d like to pick Galarraga, but who can possibly argue against Todd Helton? He is having an amazing year.

Methinks you’re looking at past achievements on this one to be honest. (Or you don’t like the Mets!)

PLAYER AVG R H 2B HR RBI BB SO OBP Slg
Alfonzo .354 43 68 18 10 42 35 25 .446 .615
Biggio .254 34 48 5 1 16 38 37 .402 .339

And I don’t think anyone would debate that Alfonzo is a better fielder. That combines with substantially better numbers for Alfonzo (hell, he is batting a full hundred points better!!) make him the obvious choice here.

True on all counts. I don’t like the Mets, I just like Biggio better. I never said he was the right choice for the All Star team. In that same paragraph I also mentioned that I’d like to see more Cardinals all-around, but I know that of all the Cardinals, only Edmonds truly deserves it (and of course, Big Mac, but come on, let’s give someone else a chance here, and Helton is having one hell of a year.)

I wasn’t trying to say Biggio was better and deserved it more than Alfonzo, that second paragraph is just who I would like to see (I’d prefer Vina to both of them!), and I really can’t see any fault in those original picks. Randy Johnson is kicking serious ass in Arizona, but I’d also like to see Todd Stottlemeyer (8-3, too bad he hurt himself), Garrett Stephenson (8-0), and Darryl Kile (7-2?) make the team. Forgive me if my stats are wrong, but I don’t have a newspaper in front of me and I’m too lazy to surf the web for it.

_Position__ ____American League____ ___National League___
First Base E. Martinez (Mariners) T. Helton (Rockies)
Second Base D. Deshields (Orioles) E. Young (Cubs)
Shortstop A. Rodriguez (Mariners) R. Gutierrez (Cubs)
Third Base T. Glaus (Angels) K. Caminiti (Astros)
Catcher I. Rodriguez (Rangers) M. Piazza (Mets)
Outfield J. Dye (Royals) J. Edmonds (Cardinals)
             D. Erstad (Angels) B. Giles (Pirates)
             C. Everett (Red Sox) V. Guerrero (Expos)
Pitcher P. Martinez (Red Sox) R. Johnson (D-backs)

NL:
I was tempted to throw Sosa in the list somewhere but he’s just slacked off on his defense so much its not right. Eric Young most certainly belongs a 2B, leading the NL is SB, and puting up huge numbers for a lead off man. While Alfonzo edges him out in some of the power numbers, stolen bases and getting on base are most important for a 2B. Chipper is off to a slow start at the plate and in the field, for 3B I’m taking Caminiti based mainly on hitting, 3B is a batters slot. Giles is a no brainer, no idea what you guys are smoking with Jones, not to mention he’s a punk bitch. Bonds with probably get in, and he’s deserving but I like the younger guys better.

AL:
Pudge is a lock, and I have no idea what you guys are seeing in Alicea. I picked Deshields, but its a push with Alomar, I don’t like Alomar and Deshields beats him at the plate, although I admit Alomar is probably the better glove. Martinez at 1B for sure, he’s one of the most underrated and overlooked players in the league. Otherwise there isn’t much debate in the AL.

I feel the need to take issue with several of your picks, Mullinator.
[ul][li]AL FIRST BASE: I would not want to have Carlos Delgado replaced by someone who has only played 23 out of his teams 52 games (LESS THAN HALF!!) at First Base. I thought it was bullshit when Raffie got picked last year, and though he has played a few more games not at the DH, I still feel if you play such a few amount of games at that position, you don’t deserve to go in at the expense of a player as good as Delgado.[/li][li]AL CATCHER: Varitek? Over Rodriguez?!? You must be high. Aside from the fact that Ivan might be the best defensive catcher in the game now, his batting average is 55 points higher, Ivan also scored twice as many runs, three times as many RBI’s and leads the Red Sox catcher in homers 6-2!! Hell, just look at slugging: Rodriguez has him beat .717-.439!!![/li][li]NL SECOND BASE: Vidro and Alfonzo have almost identical stats, and I only went with the Met because he is a phenomenal fielder, and frankly, I’ve seen him more. But I don’t think Vidro is a bad pick at all, in fact that was one of my tougher calls.[/li][li]NL THIRD BASE: You’re such a hometown fan! I think the stats speak for themselves here, Mullie…[/li]

PLAYER AVG R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB OBP Slg
Caminiti .329 37 53 11 0 14 40 36 .450 .658
Jones .293 32 54 11 0 11 36 29 .384 .533

[li]NL OUTFIELD: Again, I feared you were being a homer again. Looking at the stats:[/li]

PLAYER AVG R H 2B 3B HR RBI OBP Slg
Finley .337 45 66 12 0 19 52 .395 .689
Jones .318 40 62 9 1 14 28 .425 .590

I would have to say that it is close, and Jones is a great fielder, but I still think Finley is doing just enough more at bat (especially the power numbers) to sneak in ahead of Andruw.[/ul]
Other than that, we agree! Not bad!

On a side note, I’m kicking ass with this vB code!

Yer pal,
Satan

I HAVE BEEN SMOKE-FREE FOR:

Satan, I will shamelessly admit to a little hometowning, but I also admit to doing it with players that are at least worthy of making the team. Not a great defense, but a decent one. As for my picks and the reasons…
Andruw Jones - I truly believe he belongs. His stats are quite good and he is an amazing fielder. You never know when he might do something amazing, which makes him a good pick in my book.
Jose Vidro - Good stats, breakout year, and I like him because he is coming from out of nowhere.
Chipper Jones - Hey, I almost picked Fernando Tatis here. None of the 3rd basemen excited me, so I went hometown.
Palmeiro - I didn’t realize how few games he has played as a 1st baseman. I would change that pick to Delgado most likely. Thanks for the heads up.
Jason Varitek - We went to the same college. I won a decent amount of money from him in poker. I like him. He is also a really good defensive catcher (on a staff with some very differing pitching styles), a leader, and a darn good hitter. Not the equal of Pudge, but I still think he belongs and personal knowledge gives him the edge.

And, durn nice job with the code there.

**

Which is why Alfonzo has a higher batting average, twice as many walks and ultimately has an on base percentage 75 points higher than Young, right?

Oh, and not only is he not leading the NL in stolen bases, he isn’t even leading for his position, since fellow second baseman Luis Castillo of the Marlins has three more than him. I would have given him some consideration at the spot too, except he hasn’t played in enough games for my liking. :: cough-cough-Cubs-fan-cough-cough ::

**

Well, since his stats are a virtual equal with Steve Finley, I disagree. All of them. It’s almost scary. I’d have no quibbles if you went with either of them, but I fail to see a “no brainer” here.

**

Not one of mine, and in fact I already stated my case against him.

**

Yeah, he is on the short list. It’s nice, though, that even with him getting in because of his name that he is putting up some amazing numbers himself.

**

Again, I think you are prone to hyperbole here. The stats between Deshields and Alicea are pretty much equal, with Alomar behind them both but a better glove. I think you don’t go wrong with any of the three, and I ultimately went for Alicea because of his superior batting average.

Well of COURSE he’s the most underrated first baseman! After all, how can you rate someone if they don’t play as much as a single inning at the position?

I will repeat this because of the sheer folly in the true statement: EDGAR MARTINEZ HAS NOT PLAYED A SINGLE INNING OF BASEBALL THIS YEAR DOING ANYTHING BUT DESIGNATED HITTER!

Yer pal,
Satan

TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
One month, three weeks, four days, 1 hour, 39 minutes and 45 seconds.
2202 cigarettes not smoked, saving $275.34.
Life saved: 1 week, 15 hours, 30 minutes.

Satan, most of my statements were in responce to Mully’s choices since I C&Ped his code and altered his players.

About Alicea and Deshields? Equal except 15 SB…kinda important there, but being a Yankees fan you don’t watch much real baseball…fucking DH.

When I checked the SB stats for Young I looked at the SB stats for taken players in my fantasy league, assuming the SB leader was taken, Castilla wan’t, my bad.

Unfortunately the Fantasy stats let me down again, they didn’t indicate any DH stats and if your claim about Martinez is true, I 100% agree.

Baseball sucks!

Here are the 25 players that I’d put on the NL team:

Todd Helton
Mark McGwire

Edgardo Alfonzo
Jose Vidro

Barry Larkin
Ricky Gutierrez

Ken Caminiti
Chipper Jones

Jim Edmonds
Brian Giles
Vladimir Guerrero
Steve Finley
Barry Bonds
Sammy Sosa

Mike Piazza
Jason Kendall

Randy Johnson
Greg Maddux
Kevin Brown
Ryan Dempster
Kris Benson
Robert Person
Danny Graves
Trevor Hoffman
Bob Wickman

How about the folly of NOT HAVING EDGAR MARTINEZ ON THE ALL-STAR TEAM AS DH LAST YEAR?! What are these people THINKING?! How much does the man have to do to get RECOGNIZED?!

SICK, SICK people! You should all be ASHAMED of yourselves!!

Rggh.

And if Griffey is the starting centre fielder, I’m not watching.

Satan,

Thanks for a good list. I think I’d probably make mine fairly close to yours. At any rate, I can’t really argue with any of your calls.

I see that, even though you’re a self-described Yankee fan, you are, above all, a baseball fan, since you put two Boston players on the AL team and two Mets on the NL. Although Fonzie’s and Piazza’s choices are pretty much no-brainers. As a Mets fan, I was hoping for Derek Bell in the OF, too, but he’s slipped a little in May and June. Alas, no Mets pitchers (which may keep them out of the post-season).

Again, Satan, thanks.
