How come personal ads only seem to work long-distance??
Currently I have ads on two websites: Yahoo Personals, which pretty much just serves the U.S., and amigos.com, which is in Spanish and is read all over the US and Latin America. Both ads are pretty much the same, only translated.
I have never gotten a message from my Yahoo ad, ever.
amigos.com was a different story. Within two days of posting my profile, I got deluged with messages from women living in Latin America. (Nearly half of them Colombian – people must really want to get out of there.)
I’m trying to be a good fellow and answer all the messages, but lemme tell you, it’s getting a bit overwhelming. And the thing is, it’s highly unlikely I’ll ever meet any of these people in person. Neither they nor I have a lot of money for travel, and Uncle Sam doesn’t like Latin Americans coming here in any case.
So the result of my adventures in the personals is that I now have more long-distance pen pals than I can use, and it seems to be near-impossible to hook up with somebody who lives in the same country. Even the Latin women on amigos.com who live in the US don’t bother responding.
If you want you can take a look at my English-language ad and tell me what I’m doing wrong that’s keeping the American women away. (No link, I think you have to be a member with a Yahoo! password to get in. I use the same handle I use here, tclouie.)
Maybe what I’m doing wrong is I’m not saying I’m rich.
