My Altoid chewing gum turns to mush after about an hour of chewing.

Is it me (perhaps my saliva is too acidic) or is there a design flaw in the gum? Also my wife says that I have “squid breath” when I eat garlic, chinese food, and onions which hits about three hours later and lasts a full day. Is this indicative of disease (I know that diabetes can produce “nail polish” breath and is sometimes descibed as fruity) and can I do anything to minimize this from occuring. I have given up garlic, and onions and they were among my favorite foods.
