My apartment went up in flames

On Tuesday morning at about 1 AM I woke in my apartment and there was smoke everywhere in my bedroom.

I ran and got the fire extingusher(SP?) and tried to put out the blaze in my bed room. The first FE died and I ran outside and grabbed another. When I got in the apartment the smoke was so thick I knew I couldn’t do anything and ran outside. (Did I meantion that I sleep in the nude?).

Thankfully someone had already called the fire department and they showed up just I went outside. The firemen broke in the windows and started hosing down the fire. I told them that my three cats might still be inside. At that point I was put in the ambulance and given oxygen. I was pretty well out of it.

After a while, I don’t remember how long, a fireman walked up and handed me a pair of sweat pants and a jacket which I put on. He told me that the fire was out and they didn’t find my cats inside.(It was an electrical fire) One of the neighbors had my namesake, Slee, but the other two cats were nowhere to be found. By this time my sister had arrived and we looked for my other two kittens with no luck. Then, one of my neighbors said she saw someone take my other cats. We figured that another neighbor took the cats in and decided to look for them the next day. I went to my sisters house with Slee and crashed.

The next day we came back to my apartment to look for my kitties and see how bad the fire was. We went in and my bedroom, bathroom, closet and %70 of my living room are gone. Toast, water and black ash. All my clothes gone. My bed, dresser, all the bedroom funriture is gone. In the other room my desk made it, my laptop and a monitor and hopefully my TV, VCR, Stereo and my tower. I don’t know about the last four because I haven’t moved them out yet. My other furniture, couches and chairs are gone.

At that point I went into the kitchen, which survived intact, and started opening cabinets. I opend the cabinet under the sink and my cat Gouda shot out. She ran into what was left of my bathroom obviously scared shitless. I got her out of that mess and she hid under the couch. I left her there and broght her some food.

About this time one of the managers of my complex asked me if I wanted another apartment in the building. She said she had only one open but if I wanted it all I had to do was fill out a new lease. I said sure and we filled out the new lease and she gave me the keys. I coaxed Gouda out enough to grab her and put her in a box and took her over to the new apartment. When we got in the new place Gouda hid in the box for like an hour. When she finally came out of the box she ran to a corner and hid behind the blinds. I figured that she was way scared and the best thing to do was leave her alone for a while. I put some food and water right next to her and went to pickup my other cat from my sisters place and get some clothes. Before we left we put up fliers for Dagny, my missing cat.

Now it’s Friday. I got my phone working in the new place. I am sleeping on a sleeping bag and a pillow. My two cats are healthy but still very stressed out. I still haven’t found Dagny. I am so concerned about her it is driving me crazy. I have been leaving food out for her at my old apartment and it is gone in the morning but I don’t know if Dagny is the one eating it. I’ve called the animal shelters and she isn’t there.

I don’t care about anything, really, except getting Dagny back. That and I am thankful that no one got hurt.

So, how was your week?

Slee

OH MY GOD! I am so glad that you are alright, and I hope that Dagny is fine too, and just hiding out somewhere, temporarily scared.

I’m not sure what else to say here, except that I hope you find Dagny soon.

~V

Oh, man that sucks! :frowning:
Glad you and the kitties are OK.

My goodness!

Dude, I’m glad you made it out OK. I hope you find your other cat. But still, that could have been a LOT worse, wouldn’t you say? You could have passed out, or not even have woken up.

The rest is all material… I hope you’re insured for this sort of thing.

Oh, and I’ve just decided that I’m picking up a fire extinguisher tomorrow. 1930’s apartment with the original wiring…

Whoa - glad you and two of your cats are OK.

Hope Dagny shows up soon.

Sleestak, I’m glad you’re okay and I hope you find your cat. But I’d like to also ask if you’ve got insurance. You lost an awful lot of stuff and it might be pretty expensive to replace everything.

In addition to buying a fire extinguisher, people who live in apartment buildings should make sure they have an alternate escape plan to get out of the building if there is a fire. I’ve seen ladders that you can hook on to balconies or windows to climb out of a burning building.

Slee-
That’s so sad and awful what happened! It must be awful not knowing where your other kitty is, you must be going nuts!! I can’t imagine the relief to see your Gouda cat run out-(cute names, btw). Good thing you didn’t get Carbon Monoxide poisoning and not wake up! My cat always comes running to the sound of a can opener or a treat bag crinkling. How bout some tuna-bait? Brave-slee,glad you’re okay! NM

How do you think it got started, and are your neighbors keeping an eye out for Gouda while you’re not around?

Thanks to all for your support. It’s been a bad week and my family, while trying to help, just tend to stress me out. They really care but tend to be so pro-active that they won’t let me freakout about the whole thing. As soon as I woke up the day after it was a constant litany of things I had to do. I finally got them to understand that an hour for me to get over what had happened was a good thing.

Medstar, I don’t have insurance because, in the long run, it is cheaper to replace my stuff. The only thing I have that has any large value is my guitar. All the other stuff is either old, like my computers, or just sentimental.

As far as escape routes go, that is a good idea. But I lived on the ground floor and the only 2 exits were the front door and my bedroom window.

Right now the money isn’t the issue, it’s just that everytime I turn around I remember something that I lost. The blanket my Grandmother knitted for me, the bookshelf my grandfather made for me, My pictures of Dagny as a kitten.

Damn…

I am going to go before I end up crying.

Slee

GROOOOUUP HUG!!!

Wow, that’s awful. I always worry what I’ll do with all the pets in case of a fire.

If the food is still disappearing, it’s probably Dagny. Maybe you could try one of those Have-a-Heart traps to catch the little sweet. Good luck!

Day-yam. Slee, this sucks, massively. (Yeah, I know, no shit sherlock.) Our hearts go out to ya.

Best o’ luck getting things back together, mentally and physically. You’ve got 2 of your cats, for sure, and at least you know Dagny could still turn up, alive and well.

<on a lighter note>
And probably, in typical feline fashion, oblivious to your concern. “Would you put me down, and stop getting me all wet, please, you slobbering biped? I need to groom myself, and where’s dinner, anyway?”
</on a lighter note>

Best wishes, mate.

good grief.

i hope you find out about dagny soon.

cats are really good at hiding as you found out from gouda. are there any place where it burned through the wall that she could be holed up in?

it is great that there was a new apartment right away for you.

i’ll add prayers for dagny to be found.

:frowning:

Blimey. Glad that you’re okay and I hope you find Dagny. At least you’ve managed to get yourself sorted out with somewhere else to stay and weren’t hurt.

Dude. :frowning:

When I was 17, our house burned down. We lost everything, inlcuding our two cats. So I know what you’re going through.

People kept saying stuff like “Well, at least you all made it out ok, you just lost stuff, and stuff can be replaced.”

It isn’t just stuff, it’s your life and your memories and keepsakes and things you don’t even realize you cherished until they’re gone. (I’ll just gloss over the whole issue of our 14-year-old cats dying :frowning: )

It’s been about 15 years and I still have moments where I wish I still had this object or that object. Especially my old toys and books. Sigh. I went through a phase for about 2 years afterwards where if I saw something in a second hand store or at a yard sale that was identical to something we’d owned before the fire, I’d buy it. Even if I didn’t need it or want it.
I cruise ebay every now and again looking for things. Almost never bid on them though. I’m mostly cured.

On a brighter note, try going to your old apartment late at night when the whole building is quiet and hang out for a while.

We moved from one house to another in the same neighborhood one summer while I was in college. About a week after we moved, one of our cats failed to show up in the evening. She was missing for a few days, and we went walking around the neighborhood calling her. We even went over to the old house (only 2 blocks away) and called her, but she didn’t appear.
Finally my mom and I decided to go over really late at night when everything was quiet. We called her name a little, she didn’t appear, so I decided to go into the backyard and call her, since the woods behind the house had been her favorie hangout.
I called her name and she came running.
I don’t know if she couldn’t hear us calling, or was too scared to come out when the neighborhood was busy during the day (she was a timid cat). We took her over to the new house and she seemed to understand this time that that was her home, not the old house.

I’m so sorry, slee. I’m keeping my fingers crossed about Dagny.
You need money, hon? Got paypal? I have a little (quite little, but still, sometimes that makes all the difference) I can send your way. (I have lots of karma debt I have to take care of, y’know.)
Take good care, and give yourself all the time you need to get back on your feet emotionally.

I’m glad you and two of your kittens are alright… I’m sending hope that you find Dagny. Poor kitty was probably scared witless.
