Lots of new pics and a few updates on Getty’s site. After what she’s been through, to see the little Owl full of smiles and joy just warms the heart. She’s so cute in the pink outfits (with ballerina slippers) that Kate chose for her.
Bear’s demonstration of how Getty’s feeding works was enlightening. http://gettyowl.com/
I’m just catching up on the thread for the last month and am reminded what a beautiful baby girl she is, Bearflag70. Getty can be proud to have been blessed with you as her mommy and daddy.
Sometimes the Internet really can be as amazing as we were promised.
Like everyone, I’m glad to hear Getty is doing so well! I ran across this blog post yesterday by a young man also with SMA 1. Apologies if it’s already been posted, but it sounds like you’re fighting for Getty much like his mother fought for him.
She just got an ipad and she loves it! She can’t hold on to anything much heavier than a cotton ball. She can’t move herself about the home to learn or play like other kids. We were looking back at some of the videos from only about 3 months ago and noticing how she was able to lift her hands against gravity up to her mouth; she can’t do that now.
We were afraid she was lacking in stimulation and would, thus, end up lacking age-appropriate cognitive development. Since SMA does not affect cognition at all, my wife and I are adamant in our desire to see Getty get proper age-appropriate mental development.
We’ve been reading articles on how ipads are beginning to help the disabled. For example, an SMA child may be able to “turn the pages” of a digital book, play math games, get exercise, and communicate via the ipad with only a slight touch of the finger.
We think one reason Getty loves the ipad is she can play with it independently. It’s probably one of the few things with which she’ll ever be able to use her hands to play and learn independently.
Otherwise, her hair is pretty fine and too short to really do anything with it. No Pebbles yet.
The holidays have gone well so far. Christmas was nice and relaxing with family. She enjoyed the tree and singing of songs. The tree was covered in owl decorations only.
