Hello Dopers. Sorry I’ve been absent for a while. Getty turned 12 a few days ago. She is doing well with Spinraza to maintain existing strength. We are currently in the hospital for an illness that accelerated the timing of a planned tracheostomy. She’s adjusting well to the new vent interface.

I know it’s been over a year since your last update, but just wanted to check in and see how the little owl was doing. I still think about Getty from time to time, even though I haven’t been an active poster on the SDMB for a few years. It has been truly amazing what you and Mrs. Bearflag have been able to do in fighting SMA and caring for Getty. I did see some of the photos you’ve posted recently on Instagram, and it’s amazing and wonderful to see her as a teenager! Continued good luck and best wishes for you, Getty and your family!

Hello Dopers! It’s been a while! Everyone’s good. Getty is a 14 year old high school student doing remote classes from home. I love her to pieces. She’s happy, sassy, independent minded, and wonderful. Thanks all for your well wishes over the years.

I can’t say it’s been an entirely smooth road. In late 2021, she had what we think is an allergic reaction to the COVID vaccine. Her face swelled up, digestion shut down, and ended up getting septic. We spent about 2 months in the hospital and got her off of the BiPAP ventilator mask a had her trached. It’s been a transition but she’s better now.
What a journey… we all keep rooting for her and for all of you.
