P.S. I’m kidding about being invited. Unless you really were going to invite me, then I’m not. It’s not like I could make it or anything.
…As well as you should. That song is sooooo straight. (Although, it just might work for Lesbians.)
But you do get points for at least trying to dance. Keep at it, get a gay friend and someday you’ll finally aspire to the utlra-chic status of fag stag.
Peace.
Order now, and get Gaydar 3000 v1.2!
That song from the pretty woman soundtrack, it’s called “fallen”
“I cant believe it, you’re a dream coming true” "I cant believe it, how I’ve fallen for you” etc.
I think that’s a nice slow song, also: wicked games-Chris Isaac
Thinking of slow dance possibilities…
Rufus Wainwright - “Greek Song” (from Poses)
Kate And Anna McGarrigle - “Love Is” (from Heartbeats Accelerating)*
Fab in their own way, for one of my favorite posters…and congrats from down this-a-way too…
(*Those are the U.S. albums…I assume that they’re the same in Canada, but you may need to dig a little bit.)
Thanks, todd33rpm. I’ll look those up on MSN Music and give them a quick listen. I trust the judgment of someone whose username leads me to believe they’re a DJ.
One of your favorite posters? Check your email.
Some additions since yesterday.
Boogie Oogie Oogie - Taste of Honey
Gay Bar - Electric Six
Dancing Queen - ABBA
Come To Me - France Joli
Don’t Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John and Kiki Dee
Slow dance: You Must Love Me - Madonna (Evita soundtrack)
Love Train - O’Jays
Dreamin’ a Dream - Crown Heights Affair
Slow dance: You And Me Against The World - Helen Reddy
I Am Woman - Helen Reddy
Slow dance: The Way Of Love - Cher
I’ve also decided (and informed Jer) that the DJ will be under strict orders to not take requests. As Groomzilla, I will not have unapproved songs played. I don’t anyone going up and requesting YMCA or the Chicken Dance or Volare or some cheezy shit other than the cheezy shit I’ve selected.
Listen, I know I have control issues. But this is My Big Fab Gay Wedding® and I’m allowed.
Right. One of my original questions that’s gone unanswered is how much time do we have to fill? Are there too many songs? Keep in mind this is all for after the dinner, the toasts will all have been made, and it’ll be time to “get down… boogie oogie oogie” as the song goes.
Does the spotlight (or whatever you call it) dance happen before the dinner? I haven’t been to a wedding in years. One thing we’re not doing is that “father of the bride cuts in, then the groom asks the mother of the bride, and then the father of the groom cuts in and dances with the father of the bride, then the token drunken uncle dances with the dog … ah, shit, let’s just go to the flowchart” thing.
So let’s say these are three to four minute songs, with few interruptions. On the list so far are about 65 songs, so multiplied by 4 and divided by 60, that’s a little over four hours of music. If dinner’s all wrapped up by, say, 7 PM, and we plan to party until let’s say 2 AM (remember, there will be no booze, but everyone will be speeding on caffeine from the coffee/juice bar) … crap, that’s 7 hours of music!
OK, I need more suggestions. Disco disco disco.
Are you looking for critique of your list in any way? Because there was a “what not to play at weddings” thread a while back and I think maybe a couple of your choices are on it…(don’t hurt me)
Let’s Hear It For the Boy - Denise Williams
Come To My Window - Melissa Etheridge
Romeo and Juliet - Alec Costandinos
I Found Love (Now That I Found You) - Love and Kisses
Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You - Boystown Gang
More More More - Andrea True Connection
So far, they’re all good choices. Nothing too objectionable, like Britney Spears or any of her ilk. Please keep it that way.
[sub]Hey, I’ve gotta listen to this, y’know![/sub]

If the wedding’s in September then you must have September - Earth, Wind & Fire!!
Actually, there’s a great techno version of the Chicken Dance out there. It’s really funny and would give great opportunity for Groomzillas and their guests to make fun of a silly tradition while dancing like crazy monkeys. We almost used it, but then I abandoned the whole idea of making mixed CDs for the reception and just used some already-made retro lounge CDs. It’s great that you could get a DJ you can count on not to get all Achy Breaky.
Congrats! I just got hitched 6 months ago and let me tell you, the planning can become quite a monster. Beware! And have fun! And go to as many cake-tastings as you can!
As someone who has DJed many a wedding, I suggest you add Shining Star by Earth, Wind & Fire.
Also, when you’re calculating the time, remember that the dj will be mixing the tunes and cutting off the endings of many songs, not to mention possibly increasing the pitch, so you’ll fit a few more songs than planned.
I’ve never done a gay wedding, but have done some mostly gay parties…I did a Jehovah Witness wedding once…
So would Divine doing Walk Like a Man be to cliche?
Has your DJ done weddings before? You may want to tell him what sort of things you want to do (cake-cutting, bouquet tossing, first dance, etc. . .) That way he can lead the crowd into these activities and can kind of set the pace for the evening (under your careful instruction, of course
) It sounds like you plan of having lots of dancing, so having too many songs is better than not enough. People will want to request things and that could cut into some of your selected music. Make sure you tell him which songs simply MUST be played and if they’re for a special part of the evening. Then let him figure out the rest. The last thing you need to do is stress over music. You’ll be so busy, you probably won’t even notice if he skips a tune here and there. Trust him to make it cool.
The first dance is usually before dinner, right when you enter the room (if you’re going to be introduced as a couple at the very beginning of the reception). I think other special dances can happen here, too. Mother, father of the groom type dances. Then everybody can dance for a little bit. Then they settle in for dinner.
Remember, you’ll have a lot of schmoozing to do. No fun for you until you’ve both talked to everyone and thanked them for coming. This will keep you very busy for a couple of hours at least. Then you can boogie-oogie-oogie to your heart’s content.
Oh, and my most very favorite love song is “Everlasting Love” by Natalie Cole. It’s upbeat and danceable, and is just so joyful. We used it on the mixed CD that served as our invitations (it had all sorts of wedding-y and forever-y songs on it). Put that one in for me!
Ahhh, ABBA. You’ve got your gay-roove back.
As you go over your list, you may want to think about how you would actually dance to some of these songs. While I Am Woman would be fun, it’s not going to be easy to dance to.
Remember this: You should take control. (And by ‘you’ I’m using the plural of you two.) You do what you want. Throw out any traditions you don’t want, make up any you do want. Don’t feel straightjacketed (pun intended) by any supposed ‘norm’ of wedding receptions. Most of the stuff that goes on at receptions is hokey (hey, do ya wanna do the Hokey Pokey?) and sometimes inappropriate (as when a 10 year old boy catches the garter belt and is expected to put it on the woman who caught the bouquet).
You set the appropriate boundaries, and if your guests don’t like it (e.g., they’re upset they can’t make song requests or drink hard liquor), that’s their problem. You only become groomzilla when you become mean, imposing, and totally unreasonable.
Peace.
[sub]Psssst. Don’t forget the Alley Cat.[/sub]
You’re the Best Thing, That Every Happened To Me - Gladys Knight and the Pips
You Make Me Feel (Like A Natural Woman) - Aretha Franklin

As others have said, The Gap Band is a must. “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” will get everyone not already on the dance floor out there. I’m also partial to “Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me?)”
I notice a lack of Prince on your list. “If I Was Your Girlfriend”! “Sexy MF”! “Delierious”! Or The Time’s “Jungle Love” and “The Bird”
We burned 5 cds of songs for our wedding (90 songs), and used 3 1/2 (about 60 songs) of them. Our dance lasted till 1:00 am. Do make sure the DJ plays your favourites early on; we had some of my favourites on the last cds, and just didn’t get to them.
Here is the song list from our wedding (we took about a year to come up with this list, so there may be a few forgotten treasures on it; we tried to make sure there were Canadian songs on it as well, and keep the songs appropriate for weddings - no “Every Breath you Take” by the Police):

Can I Have This Dance - Anne Murray (parents’ dance - also, a great waltz)
Unforgettable - Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole (so cliched, but still so beautiful)
