My Big Fab Gay Wedding®: Help with the DJ song list!

So far I’ve posted My Big Fab Gay Wedding® threads in MPSIMS and IMHO. Now I’m extending the hype to Cafe Society. (I’m sure as the date approaches, you’ll see quite a few Pit threads about the wedding, as I’m sure to turn into a Groomzilla.)

We’re less than a year away: the blessed and très gay occasion is still scheduled for September 18, 2004.* For the music, Jer is planning on flying one of his club DJ friends up from Florida. (Jer used to work in Miami/South Beach gay bars, the ones the likes of Gloria Estefan, Madonna, and Ricky Martin - quelle surprise - would frequent.)

However, even though I’m sure DJ-friend has an extensive collection of today’s hottest and phattest grooves and yesterday’s classics, my love for slightly-more-obscure 70s disco - and my insistence that these songs be played at the wedding reception that I’m planning (Groomzilla emerges!), we’re going to need to find these on CD. I figure a couple of good 70s box sets should give us a lot of these songs, but some of them we’ll have to buy on individual artists’ greatest hits collections, or elsewhere.

Anyway, here’s the list, in no particular order, save for the first few slow dances. The rest was as I thought of the songs by artist, though we might play Cher’s “swarthy trilogy” and her 1979 disco hit “Take Me Home” in sequence. Same thing for the Madonna set.

You’ll note the absence of cliché “gay” songs such as “I Will Survive” and “YMCA” and “It’s Raining Men”. I prefer to compose my gay setlist with a little more class, creativity, and subtlety.

Any suggestions? How much time do we have to fill, and how many songs does that translate to? This is strictly for the after-dinner part; during dinner we’ll play mellow jazz or bossanova lounge music or something.

And don’t hit me for including Clay Aiken. Hopefully he’ll have come out by then.

Funny!
and congrats!!!

The Smiths - Hand In Glove
Electric Six -Gay Bar

Maybe, I dunno…

Congrats with your wedding!

Interesting you should post that. Jer got home a few minutes ago, and I had web radio disco on, and what came on but “More Than A Woman” (the Tavares version, which I prefer to the Bee Gees original). I said we’d have to use some creative digital sound editing to convert it to…

… wait for this …

"More Than A Bottom"

I crack myself up. And I scare the hell out of everyone else. Oh well.

Oh yeah, the “Gay Bar” song, thanks Hüsker Düde. Added.

And what comes on web radio just now? “When Will I See You Again?” … the song that was playing in the supermarket on one of our first “dates.” ::sigh::

Web radio is reading my mind today! I’ve given in and added a rather gay song… “Dancing Queen” by ABBA.

ow! stop hitting me, i’m kidding!

Hey scott, any plans to webcast the wedding and/or reception?

Well, Otto, we do intend to invite many gay Dopers and their SOs - regardless if we think they’ll be able to make it - so you might just be there yourself. You never know.

However, we might videotape it, and since I work in video, I doubt it will be a problem for someone to edit it all together wonderfully, author a DVD, and burn it to DVDs that we can send with our thank-you cards.

Given your criteria, you have a wonderful selection, scott

May I suggest:

  • The Gap Band - you have no Gap Band on you list. This must be addressed immediately. Either “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” or “Put the Pedal to the Metal and Burn Rubber on Me” (can’t remember its real name. Critical.

  • Not the least bit obscure, but Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” would fit in quite well.

  • Hmmm, no true funk, per se. And I am not sure if you would want it, but I have to offer the Isley Brothers’ “Fight the Power”, James Brown’s “Sex Machine”, “Cold Sweat” or “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” - I am sure the last one could be re-interpreted to fit your wedding…

  • And no rap, yet, Sugar Hill’s “Rapper’s Delight” is based on a Chic bass groove. Understandable if you leave it off, but could be a great choice…

All for now - let me know how I did and there may be more…

Wow, no O’Jays on the list. That’s a serious omission. Gotta have “Love Train”!

WordMan, MFSB is kind of funk… more soul, though.

You’re right in that there must be some tracks by the Gap Band. I’ve also neglected to include Crown Heights Affair (“Galaxy of Love”, “Dreamin’ a Dream”).

Also, I’m including original versions, so “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” will be the original Elton John/Kiki Dee version.

Well, Otto got there first with “You and Me” from the movie Victor/Victoria. That’s one of my favorite sequences from the film.

I hear what you said about the Sept. 11 date. Wonder how many years it will be before people start planning “happy” events, like weddings, on that day again?

Cool.

If you want some more silly rock in the similar vein, you should check out some classic tunes from the homoerotic Norwegian punk band: Turbonegro.

Maybe ‘Prince of the Rodeo’ (this one is really danceable) or ‘Get It On.’

What? No ABBA? What kind of self-respecting faggot are you?

For your penance, you must watch The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert again.

Consider:

Slow dance: Stand By Your Man - Tammy Wynette

Slow dance: To Sir, With Love - Lulu

Slow dance: I’ve Got a Crush on You - Linda Rhonstadt
From the Red, Hot + Blue album, a tribute to Cole Porter / Red Hot AIDS Benefit series…

Slow dance: You Do Something To Me - Sinead O Connor

Slow dance: So In Love - K.D. Lang
Peace

[sub]And what about the time warp?..[/sub]

finally - ce ce peniston

The lyrics will be just perfect for ya.

So happy to see Sylvester on the list. If you need to find some of these songs, I suggest browsing emusic. In US$ it’s 9.95 a month, and I found many of the listed tunes there - which was a delight, because I didn’t really need all of Sylvester, but I surely needed some  emusic is a little short on anything modern, but has a great selection of oldies and compilations.

Well, I’m not gay, and I’m a terrible dancer, but Captain & Tenille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together” always gets me out there shaking it.

Congrats on the wedding; hope everything goes perfectly!

(I feel SO unchic compared to y’all…)

Well damn, I guess I’d better get that wedding napkin ordered.

Can I come to your wedding, Scott? That’s my kind of song list!

Let’s see what I can think of:

Slow:
Reasons– Earth, Wind and Fire
And I Am Telling You– Jennifer Holliday (make sure Jer knows where you stand on divorce.)
One In A Million– Larry Graham
Always And Forever– Heatwave
Purple Rain– Prince
Fast:
Walking On Sunshine– Katrina and the Waves
Groove Is In The Heart– Deelite
Jungle Love– The Time (Can I ask to have this dance with you? You are inviting me, right?)

Oooh, having a brainfreeze. Must think more.
