My Cat Died and I'm Lookin' for comfort...

Okay, I know it’s not the end of the world, but my 19 yr. old cat died today. He was a good ol’ guy, and we’re gonna miss him soooo bad. Anyone else grieving over a pet?

I feel bad for you. I know how good a friend a pet can be.

I there with you sister. I had to put my cat Sam of 14 years down four weeks ago from last Wednesday. I even ended up driving past the vet’s office at about the exact time he was put down on Wednesday on accident – I almost lost it. I am still smarting from it as I spend a lot of time at home and not having him here is still weird.

I hope you feel better but let yourself cry hard if you need to. I did that about 2 weeks ago and it did help me a lot.

I have a 13 year old cat, and it’s been with me for all but 2 years of my life. Cats as old as ours become just another family member, and they even become an accepted and not always noticed member of the family. I do not know how hard this is for you, but I can imagine.

I have (had)three cats, and I know they live and die, but it’s still hard to lose one who was so wonderful for me and my husband, but also for the other cats! What will they do without him? Do they miss him? I think so.

GirlFace… a couple of months ago my cat Max got hit by a car… the Vet and I and my roommate nursed his health for 2 solid weeks and the whole time I was supported by so many dopers I was overwhelmed (I still say thank you guys! I’ll never forget that) In the end we had to have him put to sleep… it was one of the hardest and saddest things i’ve ever had to do. I buried Max and he will never be forgotten. We now have a new kitty who looks almost identical and to this day I call him Max on accident almost every day.
What I’m getting at is that I am sorry you lost your cat, I know how it feels. :frowning:

I am so sorry for your loss.

What is his name?

Thanks to all of you…it IS just like losing a family member…he WAS part of the family. I’m not gonna open a vein over it, but I will never forget what a source of pleasure he was for all of us. JEEZ! 19 Years! And he was my "little cat"s best friend! What will she do? I’m getting another one I think. We will all enjoy the happiness of a new kitty in the house! Thanks again for your support!

As far as will your other pets miss him? Depends on the pets I say… along with Max I had three dogs, the two older ones never acted different… then again they never gave notice of the cat. The youngest was his friend and playmate. When we brought Max home for burial we let them sniff him and they all seemed not sure of what to make of it and not really sure what it was to be honest. After awhile Buddy (the playmate pup) seemed to go into a depression of sorts (no kidding), he always seemed to be wandering around wanting to play but with nothing to play with, like he was looking for the cat. Now this kitten that looks like Max has taken to rough housing with Buddy in almost the exact way… they will play for hours and then collapse and sleep cuddled up together. Its so sweet it breaks my heart, and I feel so happy for Buddy that he has that again… and thankful for the new kitty.

His name was LittleJohn (his older sister was Robin Hood). He was a Tabby and Oh, so friendly! He would talk and fetch and curl up on the corner of the bed. I’ve lost some cats before, but I could never picture “us” without LittleJohn.

GirlFace,

My female cat was absolute best buddies with Sam and despite the fact I am now required to take up the loving slack (Sam helped me out a lot there as she is overly affectionate) she seems to be doing well.

My vet said to make sure to keep an eye on her for the first few days, make sure she is eating and drinking and give her extra attention. If she didn’t seem to do okay with it (they were together for 13 years) then I would need to take her in.

I gave her extra attention, started brushing her more and she seems to be doing fine.

Thanks again for being the AWSOME dopers you all are! I’m moving on, and I’m so glad others feel as close to the “Kids” as I do. They’re just such a beacon in the storm, eh?

I’ve been trying to track down a quote by Mark Twain, but I can’t find it. So I’ll just repeat it as best I can:

When you reach heaven, you’ll find all your pets lined up outside the gate, because none of them will go in without you.

I’m so sorry to hear that your LittleJohn passed away. :frowning: You know, everyone always talks about how our pets love us unconditionally, but it occurred to me that most of us are just as unconditional in our love towards them. Every time one of my cats has vomitted up a hairball on my pillow or my dog has chewed apart a tasty looking paperback – I just can’t get angry with them. And after a difficult day, there’s nothing more therapeutic than puppy kisses or a purring kitten on your lap.

Give lots of extra hugs to your other kitty for me.

OMYJOD, Lesa! That’s probably the sweetest thing I have ever heard about pets. I’m not a believer in Heaven/Hell, but I’ll tell ya…if that’s what heaven is about, I’m There!

Thanks, Serendipity (sp)! I feel so guilty about being annoyed by his little kitty self, only last week! But he was still just a kitty, right? Thanks for being a “kitty” pal.

I’m so sorry, dear girl. My cats have always been my children, and when I lost the two eldest ones 2 1/2 years ago, I was devsastated.

My heart goes out to you.

Scotti

I’m very sorry, GirlFace.

Seven years ago I lost my 15-year-old cat named Bobbie, and I cried like a baby over it. All this time later, I still think about her and miss her.

i am sorry to hear aboutyou caT, little john.
you have my sympathies.

Your cat was very lucky to have an owner like you for so many years.
