Watching the Rita Hayworth-Glenn Ford hit Gilda (1946) on Turner Classic Movies a few nights ago, I kept asking myself, “Who is the guy with Ford who looks sorta like Cesar Romero, but isn’t? I know I’ve seen him.”
It was Joseph Calleia, a standby in underworld sharpie roles in the '30s and '40s, and one of comparatively few celebrities who could trace his ancestry to Malta.
I just saw the James Cameron blockbuster Titanic again, and thought the Irish mom of the two adorable kids (she tucks them in with a bedtime story as the ship is going down) looked familiar. Looked her up on IMDb.com and was amazed to realize that she also played the kickass Latina goddess, Pvt. Vasquez, in another little Cameron flick you might have heard of, Aliens: Jenette Goldstein - IMDb
She was also in another Cameron flick T2. She was John Conner’s guardian (Aunt maybe?). Remember Robert Patrick spoke in her voice on the phone while he killed her with a liquid metal spike in the head?
I remember the scene well (shudder), but I didn’t remember that that was her. Thanks! Quite a very talented actress, to be able to play a 1912 Irish mom, a hardass Latina soldier and a white trash LA housewife equally well.
Molina rivals Gary Oldman in his ability to morph himself almost unrecognizably into his roles. For instance Rahad Jackson (at house w/firecrackers) in Boogie Nights, Diego Rivera in Frida, and Solomon Solomon in Magnolia, to name but a few. Excellent actor.
I loved him in Coffee and Cigarettes in his scene with Steve Coogan (another brilliant guy). The movie ended up getting caught in the projector and melting and I didn’t really care, but I liked that scene a lot because of both of them.
Not to mention a southern trash vampire in Near Dark - which also starred Bill Paxton and Lance Lance Henriksen from Aliens and was directed by Kathryn Bigelow (married to James Cameron 1989-1991). Check out Near Dark for a very young and yummy Adrian Pasdar of current Heroes fame!
Jenette Goldstein is definitely a chameleon and one of my favorites!
Also one from Stir of Echoes that I proudly called…the smokin’ cute wife, Kathryn Erbe, played Richard Dreyfuss’ daughter in What About Bob?. She grew up quite nicely I must say
I was reading a fan site about Blade Runner today and discovered woah! The creepy origami guy was James Edward Olmos - Adama on BSG! And the snake lady was Joanna Cassidy - Brenda’s Mom on Six Feet Under!
