I went to pick up my children from school today and they are so excited that they are going to be on two different stations tonight and possibly the front page of the paper tomorrow!
Madison Elementary School in Davenport Iowa did a balloon release and sang God Bless America and said the Pledge under a half mast flag this afternoon.
The younger children were told to find buddies with the older children in the school so they could hold hands and release together.
My children finally feel that they have done a bit of something for the people lost and missing.
That’s really great, Kricket. Sure, on the whole it’s a small thing, but what a great way to put together an activity to help kids positively outlet their feelings.
Just as an aside from a dyed in the wool cynic, if there’s anybody on the news who throws a hissie fit because balloon releases aren’t “eco-friendly”, please get their names and addresses for me so I can send a “You’re a moron” card.
Make sure you tape the news. Your kids will always want to be able to see it.
Called all grandparents and aunts and uncles since I had to work while it was being broadcast and hopefully it got taped by someone.
You know FallenAngel I never even thought of someone being an ass about something school children decided to do, but I guess you are right. I will be sure to let you know if anyone pitched a fit over it.
Arden Ranger, my children were so excited! I have a kindergartener this year and you should have seen the excitement on his little face. My second oldest daughter is in fifth grade and has been saving all the newspapers and pasting them to cardboard and hanging them on the walls in her room. I really think today helped her so much come to grips a bit with what has been happening.
I am not good with finding or posting links, so maybe I can get ahold of BeagleDave and he can help me out with this. I know, I really should learn. Just like with my creative spelling right Troy?
The Quad City Times
does not have those photos on their web site. I checked the printed paper this morning…there are general crowd photos and one of a mom and her kindergartner on the front page…I don’t think any of them have your kids in them.
There is a memorial event at Leclair Park this afternoon…are you going?
Latex balloons expand as they rise and shred into small, biodegradable pieces after they get to a certain altitude. If anyone complains about it, you could tell them that. However, I’ve noticed that far fewer Americans than usual are being asses about little things this week.
I’ve been impressed by the way the schools in our area coped this past week. They’ve done an exceptional job making sure the kids feel safe and cared for, and they’ve had the children write to police and firefighters thanking them for the work they do. It’s important to help the kids feel like they can support the relief efforts in some small way. What your kids’ school did sounds really good.
Dave, I didn’t get a chance to make it to the park since I had to work.
A bunch of us told our supervisor that we were going to be late, but most of the shift ended up wanting to go. So they held five minutes of silence yesterday at noon. Said you could have heard a pin drop in the plant. Pretty impressive for Oscar Mayer!
Kricket… are you in a good enough mood to take a little teasing along the lines of “well, at least they weren’t being taken into custody for [insert offence]”?
bagkitty, with my five heathens one never knows.
Hey, but thanks for the idea! When the heathens get a little older I bet we could pull off some good heists!
You may now all call me Ma Barker.
