For the last couple of weeks I have been unable to access a particular web site ,even though I had no trouble before that. When I try to access th site (www.trussel.com/f_mag.htm) I get the message “This page is unavailable”. This only happens on my computer. I have got to the site OK using another computer. I have also been in touch with the person that runs the site and he says nobody else has reported the same problem. I am using IE 5.5 and my guess is that there is a cookie buried somewhere in my machine that is stopping me getting to the site.I do not have this problem with any other sites. Has anybody got any suggestions to what is happening and have other people had the same trouble with their machines?
ok you may need to clean out your temporay internet files and history folder
theres 2 ways of doing this one through ie its self or going into windown explorer clicking on windows finding the said folders and clearing them out with select all and delete
note sometimes you get a list that says sunday monday tuesday ect … just clean them out like above
you can also open internet explorer click on tools go to internet options press ehere it says delete files and clear history click on those i hope this helps …
Check that URL, I get a “File not Found” and I can’t find any similar link from the home page.
Sorry, typing error .The URL should read http://www.trussel.com/f_maig.htm and the link from the home page is “Maigret” . I should als add that I have cleared out the History and Temp Internet files both manually and using “System Mechanic”
What a whack site! Man you’re a freak! (kidding kidding)
I looked at it in frontpage. It has some table info. but IE 5.5 will not choke on that. Try saving the page as an html document on a floppy (it and the data directory will fit) and see if it can be accessed that way on the PC with a bellyache. That way you will see if you are being blocked by the type of net connection somehow, or if it’s a code issue specific to the html of the page. You might also run windows update to get the latest driver updates for your version of IE. Also in case your IE has been set to too high a security level and is choking on some french word or .jpg as being “inappropriate” or it thinks the connection is dangerous somehow, you might want to take it down a notch or two.
Firstly, does this site end with .su (as in example.su) or any other “retired” ccTLD? It could be that–if you’re trying for a .su site–that the browser doesn’t recognise the .su ccTLD.
Either that, or the page has since been modified for Opera (God bless Opera; M$IE can eat it raw) or something else that M$IE won’t support.
Oh yeah, .su was assigned to the USSR. Thanks to bibliophage for that factoid.
Just brainstorming here.
Did you resolve this problem? If not, this could be a problem caused by your HOSTS file. This file located in the WINDOWS folder was needed before DNS servers to correlate domain names and IP addresses. When you enter a domain name, that is the first place your browser looks for an IP address. In fact, I use it to avoid a lot of advertising. For example, the line
127.0.0.1 http://www.doubleclick.net
means any pages from that domain will be search for in 127.0.0.1 which happens to be your own computer. So instead of the ad, you just get a “page not found” message. There was a thread dedicated to that use of the HOSTS file which you may be able to find.
If you edit your HOSTS file you may see an entry there for the website you cannot access. Just delete that line and your browser will go back to searching for that domain to the DNS servers.
Still no luck in accessing that site. The message I get is "internal server error " and “HTTP 500”. I have located the HOSTS file in WINDOWS and when I tried an edit, the file appeared to be empty. Am I doing this right?. Any tips would be appreciated.
Some points to consider:
-
Have you tried other URLs from the same site? For instance, http://www.trussel.com/f_blade.htm?
-
When I try and ping the server, I get about a 25% packet loss; could indicate that the connection is not that reliable, and your problems stem from when you access the site, not from where
-
It could be that the computer you are having trouble from is supposed to be using a proxy server, but isn’t. If the proxy server is rather loosely configured, it could allow a lot of traffic, but deny certain regions of the 'net (based upon the bit pattern of the IP address you are trying to reach). Try pinging the address of the server and see if you can reach it (from a command prompt, use the command “ping 63.249.144.188”).
-
An HTTP 500 error is probably being returned by the target web-server (although it might be from an intermedidate proxy server), which would suggest a timing problem like the second point I mentioned.
An empty hosts file is usual, so no worries there. Good luck.
It could also be the .scTlDF that’s corrupted. Or perhaps the CGI has FTP’d into the wrong root-tree GUI.
Or, did you check the mark-up protocol on the server-side-includes? The TelCo might have included SSL’s instead of Gophers.
There’s also a distant chance that the frim-fram’s slamdango is knubbled. But I wouldn’t count on it.
Well, I guess it’s not the hosts file then. BTW, my hosts file is 11K as I have every ad spamming host there. Saves a lot of downloading junk.
But getting back to the OP: the page you quote, http://www.trussel.com/f_mag.htm does not exist so there is little wonder you can’t get it. I have no problem accessing the main page at http://www.trussel.com and maybe the one you are trying to access is http://www.trussel.com/f_maig.htm which I have no difficulty reaching. Let is know how it goes and we can keep trying.
There was a typing error in my original posting ,it should read http://www.trussel.com/f_maig.htm . I can get the main page OK and other links from it but not the “Maigret” link.Neither can I go direct by putting in the full address. If I use my company lap-top connected to the same phone line and using the same ISP and ISP account I have no trouble so the problem is with the actual computer. All that is in the host file is “127.0.0.1 lacalhost”. It is a mystery especially as this is the only url I am having trouble with.
Yep, that is a mystery as you can get to the main page of that site. Can you open all other pages in that site except http://www.trussel.com/f_maig.htm ? Or only the main page?
have you tried using a proxy? In IE got to tools - internet options - connections - settings and set up a proxy server and see if that makes a difference
On a hunch I tried accessing the problem site via another ISP and SUCCESS.It now appears that the problem is a combination of my computer and the original ISP. Another computer with the first ISP is OK and my computer with a new ISP is also OK. This is very strange.
And I ask again: are you using a proxy? Have you tried using a proxy?
No I have not tried a proxy but now I can access the site via the other ISP I think I shall leave it at that. Thanks for your help.
