My computer is chirping at me

It just started this 24 hours ago. Aprroximately once every 20 minutes I hear chirp-chirp, chirp-chirp, chirp-chirp, chirp-chirp (groupings of 2 times 4). It has never done this and a Norton virus scan and Windows troubleshoot comes up negative. Could someone by pinging me? I not very computer savvy but I’m running IE 5 on an IBM clone with Windows 98 and a DSL through BellSouth.

Thanks for any assistance.

Apparently I’m not very literate either. That should read
I’M NOT VERY…

Quasi,

Although I haven’t run across a site that explains motherboard problems in a while, assuming it’s more of a ping than a “chirp” then you may have a CMOS battery going bad. That or I would say you have a bird in your case…kidding, okay it could be a lot of things but the first thing that came to mind is the CMOS battery coming to a slow screaching halt. There may be other problems as well, I suggest you unplug her and get her to the manufacturer or to the nearest fix-it place.

It could also be that the max temp as been reached. Meaning you have so much heat and dust build up that it’s crying for help. If you haven’t cleaned her out in a while you might want to run to a store, snag some compressed air, pop her case and clean her out good. Oh and shut her down now so she can cool down.

Those are the only things that pop out at me at this late hour but shut her down, clean her out and if that doesn’t work then take her to the shop where a “professional” can work on her.

Damnit, I forgot to add your power supply could be going bad. Normally, and I have usually seen this only happen with a complete outage on a power supply. But that’s another possibility.

In either case I would just shut it down and get it to a shop before you blow the motherboard and the processor along with other items…I had a power supply go bad and luckily it was still under warranty, they had to replace the motherboard, RAM, and processor…Again I am going off of lack of sleep and I don’t think it’s that serious since you aren’t having other problems as well but still, why risk it?

Try cleaning your processor fan as well…

Thank you! I will do as you both suggested.
