My Cup Runneth Over- A Championship MMP

Ahem, mollie dear~are you young whippersnapper’splaining quick bread baking to us? I’ve been baking both 65+ years.

… biscuits are considered a quick bread, like banana bread and no-yeast bread. In other parts of the world, people may consider these American-style biscuits to be more similar to scones [from sallysbakingaddiction.com]

Similar ratio of butter to flour so biscuits aren’t higher in fat content, in neither is the butter ‘folded’ into the flour. It is always ‘cut in’ with a pastry cutter or forks. The moisture may vary-buttermilk is more likely with biscuits while scone recipes use cream or milk and perhaps an egg. In both the dough is folded and shaped much the same way. You could watch someone making scones or biscuits and until they cut the dough for baking you wouldn’t be able to tell which they were making (drop biscuits being the outlier, but then they are a modern cheap trick abomination any way).

The young whippersnapper’splaining is forgiven though since you’re so cute.

I heartily agree.

Not sure Mollie’s younger’n me actually… What you Murricans call biscuits just do not exist here. Maybe you can get some pre-made in some speciality import place, but I’ve never come across 'em. Buttermilk is actually quite an unusual ingredient this side of the pond; it’s available, but you have to go to a big supermarket and there’ll just be one type, hiding behind some cream.

I’m intrigued as to how you would tell which you’re making by how they’re cut; all the pictures I’ve ever seen of US biscuits are cut in rounds, and look almost exactly like UK scones…

The scone recipes over here tend to cut the dough into triangles (like a wee pizza) but I have seen round ones.

I don’t want to get anywhere near the cream before jam or jam before cream. Sounds like a pitched battle varying from village to village.

The elderly man who panhandles said I am to give him half of what I get cause he gave me pointers on how to do it well. Yeah, no.

That’s a great feature of message boards. I feel like I can natter on about all our boat work, and I’m pretty sure much of that nattering is scrolled past, but, no big. I’ve been known to scroll past stuff myself, the on occasion I’ve had to scroll back because it turns out I skipped over something important. But that beats going to someone and saying “What were you talking about?”

You’re going to bake it first, right? I crack me up!

Late start on laundry, but the 3rd load is washing, so there is progress. FCD wants chicken wings for supper (go figure!) so I’ve got them and a hunk o’tuna steak thawing. Not sure what the sides will be yet. I’m sure I’ll figure it out. Nothing else has been accomplished. I fell down a YouTube hole (so ashamed…)

Maybe I should pull the Shark out and see how much Otis I can pull out of the carpets.

No damage seen so far from the tornado yesterday, but next t-storm is booming away in the distance.

Amen. Says the Mainer who only discovered real biscuits at the age of 25.

Woof, done with the very long work 2 weeks. I claimed 88 hours, but it was probably closer to 100.

{{{shoe}}}

Cream then jam.

Ursala Kitteh is basking in her sun spot. I have a dicky tum so relaxing while watching the World Cup.

I have heard this from so many women. Drink water, ya idiots loved ones!

Break over, back to work.

Drop biscuits are for camping or those of us who don’t have counter space to roll them out.

Howdy Y’all! I did the duties and we had lunch at the Asia [s]hog trough[/s] Buffet. OYKW had a gnawin’ and a cravin’, so he rode with me to the church house and then we went and et. It’s kinda sorta on the way back to da cave. We shall do the leftovers tomorrow. It’s rained off and on all day. Thus this afternoon has been one of nappage, day drinkin’ and sloth. We are currently watchin’ a Netflix documentary on Thomas Jefferson. Neither of us knows why we are, but have committed to see it through.

Nuts I had no idea scones were so, umm, political? If I were at tea in Great Britain I might have a come apart over what to do with my scone. Jam first? Cream first? See what everybody else does first? Ignore scones altogether and stick with the little sammiches and cakes? Oh my!

MetalMouse glad the soccer stuff is goin’ well. If you were here, there would be no soccer today or tomorrow.

52 no judgement on the frozen pizza. Well, if you say, just gnawed on it frozen there would be some judgement. However, I am sure you baked it first. Good on you for volunteerin’ at the food bank!

Coppertone you did the work so you get the proceeds.

BBBoo when I do make bizkits they are the bizkits made like a southern grandma would. I know I would be hainted if’n I didn’t.

Wetone hope the tummy is feelin’ better now.

Up from naptime, having a Blanche Dubois and seafood stew with Old Bay.
Spot is irked at me because I used his emotional support clothes dehydrator to fold my laundry.

So I take it White Lilly flour is off the table?

To quote Travis Tritt, “Here’s a quarter, call someone who cares.”

WetOne, hope the tummy feels better.

To be fair, unless you’ve had sexual congress with The Beast, babies tend to have fewer sharp edges.

The garden was thoroughly watered. I had asked Hubs to be ready to go Krogering between 9:30 and 9:45 and I was shocked that he was up and ready to go at 9:30. I still had to put on shoes and socks and brush teeth. Due to the MMP and FCM I always check the used meat rack; today there was only one very bleak looking package so I passed it by. After we checked out, I checked the receipt and it only showed gas points in the exact amount of our purchases rather than 4 times. We spoke to a manager who told us to call 1-800-KROGERS. So, when we returned home, Hubs did and he was able to explain that the digital coupon that he had clipped did not show up in the Clipped column, only in the All Coupons column so that’s why we didn’t receive gas pts equal to 4 times our purchase amount. So, the woman he spoke to increased our gas pts so that we did receive 4X and she didn’t give him a hard time about it. He’s very personable and that’s why he was such a good salesperson. My bestie came over and used her beautician skills on me and her barbering skills on Hubs and now we’re ready for the weekend parties.

Hubs thought that the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave canceled the holiday so he was surprised that we didn’t receive any mail.

on the episode of the Great British Baking show that I watched today, they were pronouncing it like gone.

Thanks 52 :waving_hand:

FCM what kind of a pup is Otis? How old? (I’m guessing a golden)

My parents did not drink water, (don’t know why; well I think the reason Mom didn’t is that she grew up on a farm and they had to go outside to pump water) consequently we kids didn’t either. Dad drank coffee, Mom drank tea, we kids drank milk for every meal. After the kidney stones episode, I set my watch to beep every so often, I think at first it was 15 minutes or possibly half hour, and then I would drink some water. Now I’m in the habit since the kidney stone episode was 19 years ago and I drink water almost exclusively and often.

or if you’re dropping them on top of turkey pot pie and don’t want (are too lazy) to make a crust. Narrator: you resemble that parenthetical remark. Response: hey, I think my biscuits are much tastier than a crust.

I miss working at a dispensary.

I would suddenly discover I can’t math so very well, and “half” would be, uh, not half. Oops.

I texted my mom about my “maybe go visit” idea yesterday, not that I’m thrilled with this project, and she … sent me a video of a house in their 'hood that caught a bad lightning storm last night and the roof caught fire.

Not … the response I was expecting?

Evening all. Got back from the soccer fields about 6:30pm after stopping and doing the Firday shopping. Have probably over-consumed but stomach is happy again and I’ll be heading off to bed around 10pm as I’ll be up before 6am again. At least the rain is out of our area until Tuesday or so, temperatures are in the 80’sF and if there wasn’t a nice breeze blowing it would be even harder on the kids (not to mention the refs…)

Quick sweep of the discussions today.

Mollie, like you yourself said, three steps forward and two back. So you had some going back but still your a step ahead. Hang in there. And love the adventures of Chole.

Shoe, have never watched Trainspotting and after your comment it is not high on my list… Hang in there.

swampy, stay dry.

Taters, here in North Ali-bama, we call in June weather, before it really gets hot…and happy chainsawing!

FCM, hope FCD gets to feeling better soon.

Normally don’t eat scones or biscuits, but have to admit I’ve got a bit of a hankering for them after reading all the comments.

52, know what you mean, hope your feeling better.

Coppertone, not one cent for tribute!

doggio, Spot looks so relaxed there.

cat glove, glad you got the 4X points, do you also do the review on-line for the extra 50 points? Enjoy partying!

And that’s probably all for tonight, and with soccer going from 8am to 6pm tomorrow my contact will be few and terse. Have a good weekend all.

A fairly moderate day today. Started out with 57F, rose to a high of 86F. But the high only lasted about 5 minutes. Temps are already on their way down to a wonderful 52F in the morning.

Lily, yaayy for less hardware on your lovely wife! Sounds like her healing is coming along well.

Van Gogh, glad Ms. Peach stuck fast through the heavy storm, and that she forgave you for inflicting nail clipping on her. I may have to look into Huggle Hound toys for The Dark Terror. He is hard on toys. You know those super strong black Kong toys? He has at least two of the Large size at all times, and I’m glad if they last 2 months. Kid’s got some choppers on him.

I’m sorry you’re hurting, JtC. I’m sending pre-healing vibes and will be happy when this is all done for you. Not as happy as you though, I’m sure.

Re delivery pizza, I doubt we’d want it now, anyway. My tastes for pizza have changed a lot since delivery was an option, more than 20 years ago. Bet yours have, too.

And I take it I will spend more making cream cheese than just buying it? That’s all right.

swampy, I hope Precious survives this stormy spell! It sounds like apoplexy isn’t far off! Your dinner last night and tonight made me drool a little.

metal mouse, I will eagerly await your report on how you fare with the coasters and every hope that you have no issues except exhilarating rides! My friends did fill my gas tank and even treated me to lunch. None of that was expected, but it was nice of them. I guess the kidney stone continues its journey but hasn’t yet put in an appearance out the other side.

Good job on the soccering! You’ll sleep well tonight.

Shoe, you are never a failure, but with the schedule you’re keeping, you’re entitled to feel worn out. I hope there is a respite soon – although given what all you’ve shared, it doesn’t sound like that’s coming real soon. At least there is Monkey Time.

BBBooo, cat cuddles and mugs of fresh coffee do compensate a little for those times we’re prone to spiral. May you always have both comforts close to hand. And what is it with pets always needing to lick us? I’ve been trying to type for the past 15 minutes with Ollie licking my forearm.

Oh, and I’m with you on the scone v. biscuit debate.

It was, until we learned what he was dealing with. I did nothing they wouldn’t do for me. They’re truly special people. As for Ollie, he’s milked it for all it’s worth ever since he got sprung on Wednesday evening. Spoiling continued today, and he thinks that can continue for the foreseeable future, thank-you-very-much!

I’m glad you had a quiet day in there. You handle a lot.

taters, I am in awe of your chainsaw abilities (among many others). That’s one tool I leave to the professionals. I might be game if I weren’t here on my own in case something were to go horribly wrong, but I can envision all sorts of unpleasant capers were I to use one unattended. Hope you spent your day in a way that pleased you!

This is not an area to be wishy washy! I pronounce it so it rhymes with ‘gone’, and I’m an unapologetic jam-then-cream person. I don’t make scones often, but when I do, I want them like I’m sitting in a tearoom in Devonshire! But then, I’m a crass American who squeezes her tea bags, so no one should listen to me.

I’m sorry your friend’s husband is facing a layoff. I’m sure she will be grateful for your sympathetic ear whenever your grump session happens.

cat glove, yaayyy for hubby getting your gas points squared away! We have Safeway, and that’s just a Kroger wearing a Halloween mask. I pooched an accumulated amount of points worth 60 cents off per gallon a couple of months ago by letting them expire by one day. I called and whined and they credited them back to me, which they really didn’t have to do. It was nice of them.

Enjoy the weekend parties, and how cool to have a friend skilled at hair styling for you both!

Today was for waiting. Several deliveries of goods I needed, mostly having to do with the Black Mamba (treats, food and toys), some seat covers for my sweet old car. Also the pest control guy. I thought I could be at least a little useful while I waited, so I baked banana bread, installed the seat covers, romped with Ollie, cleaned out the inside of the car and tidied the kitchen.

I ended up not being very hungry last night so made do with a quarter slice of leftover pizza. That meant last night’s planned dinner of chicken in garlic cream sauce with mushrooms and spinach with pasta became tonight’s dinner. Plenty left over for dinner tomorrow night, too.

Ready for an arm wrasslin’ session with Ollie (my arm against all of him) and some bludge time before bed. Catch you all tomorrow!

Mrs Magill will be on the road for much of July, so we went tire shopping tonight. We’ll probably stick with Costco.

Dinner was Costco pizza, which usually not terrible. Tonight was different. Squeaky came with us, and he is a bad influence. We also picked up some tiramisu cups and a tuxedo cake that says “Dad”. We then went across the street to the Krispy Kreme and got some fat pills. We then went to the mall across the street and Squeaky oogled the Barad-dur and Rivendale sets, thinking they would be a good way to spend some of that sweet, sweet Whataburger money he’s saved.

We swung by the liquor store on the way home, and Mrs Magill picked up some cans of THC soda, in the hope that it’ll help the tamoxifen headache she’s had for the last three years.

Jam, then more jam.

45 can “cancel” the holiday all he wants, but until congress cancels it too, nothing will happen to.it.

Me too! All this biscuit talk made me run into Wall Mart and grab a bag of Pillsbury Southern style buttermilk biscuits and a jar of apple jelly to go with them. Baked them up in my handy-dandy little air fryer and as soon as I push send I’m going to indulge. The butter is soaked in…

I’m sure they won’t be the equal of swampie’s or his sainted grandma’s but all this talk gave me a hankering and a craving. Living alone (well the cat only licks the butter off them then sashays off leaving the biscuits behind). Bless her heart…
