Reading the various posts about people’s jobs and what they did during the day made me realize how little I’ve had to do lately. We’re in the middle of a transition where I’m getting ready to move over to another project. Until then, I have very little to do. So, I decided to post my exciting day. And, yes, this is typical.
6:00 Woke up. Took a shower, shaved, etc.
6:45 Left for work.
7:05 Entered my office and dumped everything in my pockets out on my desk. Checked Voicemail and had a message from Susan(a coworker).
7:10 Helped Susan with her problem and chatted for a while.
7:50 Left her office and grabbed doughnuts from the vending machine. Also got some coffee.
8:00 Started catching up with the SDMB.
8:15 First phone call. Easy one, but god I hate PADs.
8:20 Boss called me into his office. Listened to some funny .wavs, then talked about sports.
9:00 Another call. Hauled ass from my bosses office to get it. Guy’s having problems with his links going down. Couldn’t figure it out, so I guessed. Make note to talk to developer.
9:25 Back to SDMB
9:40 Go get a drink and stop by Steve’s office on the way back.
10:05 Read Sluggy Freelance. Contemplate checking e-mail, but decide to keep reading the SDMB. Notice that my right ass cheek is itching pretty bad for some reason.
10:45 Call #3. Not for me. Transfer to Chris. Back to SDMB.
11:05 Caught up with SDMB. Go to lunch.
12:20 Get back from lunch and check the boards. The itch is still bothering me.
12:35 Not much going on. Decide to visit boss.
12:40 Another call. Customer wants me to kill a process. No sweat. Back to boss to discuss the Star’s tent sale tonight. It just figures that they’d have it during the game tonight.
12:50 Decide to be productive and cleaned my desk. By the way, what’s promethazine? I found some in my desk. I can’t remember what I got it for. Will it help itching?
1:00 Finished cleaning. Found a copy of Civilization:CTP. Loaded it in case I got bored later.
1:15 Decide to finally check e-mail.
1:35 Finished. Back to the boards.
1:40 Nothing going on. Play Civ. The itch seems to have gone away when I wasn’t paying attention.
2:35 Get call. Don’t know the answer, so I sent her to somebody who would. Saved game and exited Civ.
2:40 Chat with Steve some more. Ask him about call #2.
3:00 Still nothing happening on SDMB, so I decide to rate some movies on Net Flix. I’ve already rated 2,136. Is that too many?
3:15 Another call. Gave her the number for sales.
3:20 Decide to check SDMB one more time.
3:45 Type this up
3:50 Post. I’m going home in 10 minutes. As exciting as my day has been, I don’t think much is going to happen.
Man, this is killing me. I need something more to do. Every once in a while I get a legitimate problem to work on that takes hours of my time. That’s what I love. But, hopefully, things will pick up once I start on the new project. I’ll actually be doing the new job and current job together. I can’t wait to be busy.
After my yearly examination a few years ago, my doctor and I were sitting in his office chatting. He was asking me the usual doctor-patient questions. Somewhere along the way I mentioned that I drank a Dr Pepper every morning instead of coffee. Seeing his frown I could tell he didn’t think that was such a good idea. He started listing all the illnesses that were assoicated with too much caffeine. One of them was…an itchy butt. I swear he gave me some medical term for this condition. I couldn’t tell you what it was called because I started laughing. All I can remember after the words “itchy butt” were “No, really. I’m serious.”
6:15 - Showered, dressed, drank coffe
6:35 - Got kids up and ready to go, said goodbye to SO as he left for work
7:00 - Took kids to the babysitters and drove to work
7:35 - Arrived at work, turned on PC, logged on to Yahoo Messenger and the Internet… checked e-mail
7:45 - Read the board
8:15 - Cleaned my office, wiped down the desk and picture frames. Re-arranged things on my desk too.
8:45 - Went to the other side of the building and visited with a friend of mine.
9:15 - Back at my desk… I pulled up a couple of files on my computer so i could toggle between them and the board in case anyone came to my desk.
9:45 - Went on break
10:15 - Came back from break and checked out the board again
11:15 - Talked to my boss for awhile about the business trip he’s taking to Nashville today. He’ll be gone until tomorrow afternoon so I’ll have lots of free time tomorrow too.
11:45 - Checked out a few sites on the internet
12:00 - Went to lunch
1:00 - Came back from lunch and check my e-mail
1:15 - Checked out the board and been here ever since.
I’ll go on break from 3:00 - 3:30 and then go home at 4:00. I haven’t done shit all day and I’m getting paid for it so I don’t complain about how little I have to do. I look busy and that’s what’s important.
I get paid quite a bit for doing this job. I’m not complaining about money, I just wish I had more to do. I do love my job, but I enjoyed it a lot more when we were busy. I did actually have a real problem at a site when I first got in. But that was over before 9 o’clock. Nothing interesting happened for the rest of the day until we all went to Hooters. Yep. Life’s a bitch.
Thank God your job is easy. Mine has me do the most difficult thing I have ever done: Explaining technology, computers, networking, etc… to elementary school teachers and college professors. Talk about exasperating.
“Um, yeah, that Apple][e that you have still works fine, but you can watch movies on this new one.”
This is not a slam on teachers, they do an extraordinary job at an impossible task, but they are REALLY set in their ways.
I don’t know if the doctor was teasing me or not. He acted serious enough. I’ll have to do some checking around on the net to see if there’s any truth to the caffeine and itchy butt theory. Or better yet, since you have all this free time, why don’t you check?
I do like to use the free time I have for something more noteworthy than Dr. Pepper Itchy Butt Syndrome. This sounds like a perfect question for Cecil, though. This is the kind of question he used to attack, though I haven’t seen questions of the same caliber recently.
I wonder if this post will catch his attention and get him to welcome me?
