My dog got skunked last night

This makes three times. The first two times I just kept bathing him and waiting it out but since then I had read about a skunk smell remedy. I gotta say it worked like a charm. Now Buck smells as good as any dogs can smell.

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/2 cup baking soda
two tbsp Dawn dish soap

Mix all this up and pour/sponge it on and work into a lather. Rinse well.

Believe it or not, the color of his fur actually looks brighter or something. The white is snow white and the orange is downright perky. I took great care to keep this away from his 6 day old neutering incision. Maybe it was his way of paying me back for that.

Just out of curiosity . . THREE times??? Does your dog have any concept of “cause and effect”?

I have an incredibly smelly cat. (She has canker sores and can’t groom adequately…she’ll have surgery in a few weeks, but in the meantime, eeeewwww!)
Maybe I’ll try this one her? It’s worth a shot. She certainly can’t smell worse.
Thanks for the recipe, too. Last time I used tomato juice, which didn’t quite do the job. I’ve heard that Massengil works, but I’ve not yet been able to bring myself to stalk into a store, muttering to myself and stinking to high heaven, and purchase a cartful of douches.

You know I think he does but figures it is worth it. He doesn’t seem to mind the smell at all. It’s his humans that have a problem with it.

I was going to post with my anti-skunk smell recipe but it’s the same one that Mermaid uses. That is the only think that works and you can’t mix it up ahead of time. The baking soda and hydrogen peroxide nuetalize the smell and the soap removes the oily skunk spray off of the pooch. The bottled stuff that you can buy in the pet store does not work.

My dearly departed chow chow, Casey, was skunked many, many times. She was a sweetie pie but not too bright. About a year ago we bought a new little puppy, Olive; another black chow chow. Olive is a smart one and has yet to be skunked. It’s just a matter of time, I know, but I think it will only happen once to Olive.
